Would any here be able to advise me on the best way to remove growth from the bottom of an aluminum boat? The previous owner left it in the water for three weeks? and there is a coating that gives the bottom of the boat a surface like an emery wheel. There are the bases of conical shellfish still attached, I used a chisel to remove the cone part.

I am considering getting a paint remover wheel for the angle grinder, but I am concerned that I may cause some damage to the alloy. How does everyone else do it? Apart from actually looking after their boat.

Spray the bottom of the boat with water using the garden hose with the high pressure nozzle to loosen any dirt, slime and sand.

Barnacle, moss and algae growth on your boat's hull are not only very unsightly but left unchecked, can lead to hull corrosion. They can cause drag in the water, resulting in lowered fuel efficiency of the boat, and they can degrade the value of your boat if you plan to resell it. Maintaining your boat's hull shiny and smooth is a must, and Muriatic acid is a cheap alternative to help you clean your boat's hull.

Clean the boat using the brush to completely remove any barnacles, slime and moss growth. more

Around here we have a Zebra Mussel problem. On certain lakes, your boat must be impounded on dry land for 2 weeks (I think--I may be incorrect) to kill any larvae before you are allowed to launch. If you break the seal or use the boat elswhere the waiting period begins again. Big pain in the butt, but apparently necessary. I suspect that the 2 week period is overkill by regulatory agencies opting to be safe.
Your barnacle problem may need to same time frame.

You should talk to the barnacles about the strategy of monthly cleaning. Pinhead size would be about a week or so. here

The issue with having them grow on the boat is more one of getting them off the hull. They may live only a short while after being out of the water, but they hold a grip for months. When I take my boat out of the water for the season, I usually let the (few) barnacles sit over the cold winter months (5-6 months). then they will pop right off. Otherwise you'll need harsh chemicals and a lot of work to get them off.

A sailing buddy of mine day launches his sailboat for races, etc. with a fleet of other boats. He tells me that after a day on the water they can feel the barnacle larvae attached to the hulls when they pull the boats. here

Is there any spray or wash (that is not very toxic) that can speed up the process? Fresh water? Lemon juice or vinegar?

According to PC Marine Surveys, electrolysis is defined as, “chemical changes in a solution or electrolyte due to the passage of an electric current.”

Many boat owners leave their craft in the water to avoid the fees and hassle that come with boat trailers, lifts, power sources, and other necessary tools. here

If you face this issue with your aluminum boat, you are not alone. Many boaters struggle with electrolysis and the problems that it causes.
