Re: removing decals. any tips n tricks? here
anyone have much experience or tips on the best way to remove old decals from a fiberglass cowl?
Heat gun or hair dryer. You can also try Goo-gone or other adhesive remover spray(3M).
Re: removing decals. any tips n tricks?
I?d suggest that you use the wonder wheel. It is quick, simple and chemical free. [links]
If all too hard i wont bother -just seeing if anyone has done this before with success!
cheers

I am buying a few parts for the yam out of the US at the moment (anodes/water seperator a few other bits an pieces) and want to replace the front cowling sticker as the "clear" or see through part of the sticker has gone yellowish and cracked (looks pretty ordinary)
does anyone know how to get the old stickers off without damaging the paint underneath? - dont think acetone would be a good idea, the surface is curved slightly so razor blade not ideal. attached a pic -not sure if its clear to see. [links]
unfortunately this is not a tutorial but rather a question!
Hey mate, try bunnings, they have a spray for sticker removal. Its got something to do with citrus, smells like oranges. Spray it on wait a bit and even those real hard stickers peel off, after you get rid of the sticker just keep spraying the residue and wipe with a rag works a treat! here
try an electric heat gun, and scraper, then goo gone to get the glue.
I then removed the glue with Acetone. My cowling was Merc Aluminum wraparound. If your cowling is made of plastic DO NOT use Acetone as it will break down the plastic and frost it. [links]
that goof-off stuff looks like it can do a good job, just a pitty we don't get it here . my heat gun was broken so I used the wife's hardryer and nail polish remover, worked great, thanks guys .
In the photos above, this is the method I first started using. I had used it previously to remove the name of a car dealership from a vehicle I purchased and it worked well for those small letters on the tailgate. more
However, when trying to remove the vinyl registration letters from my ten year old boat, it really did not work very well and my fingers were yelling at me. here
What Is An Eraser Wheel? An eraser wheel is a tool that connects to a drill that you use to remove stickers and decals. Typically you see these used in the automotive world to remove vinyl pinstripes from a car.
If this is the first time you have tried removing stickers with heat on a boat (or any object for that matter) I suggest using a hair dryer because they do not get as hot as a heat gun, but can still do the trick, only slower. here
