Testing the stator only requires an ohmmeter, you do not need to remove the flywheel. Disconnect the yellow leads to the rectifier. Disconnect stator leads from switchbox. Engine should be cold, resistance increases with temperature. Specifications are from a manual that only goes up to 1990.

While a stator is dying, it can produce a weak spark, causing the engine to miss or run poorly. Symptoms are often worsened as the engine warms up. [links]

What Outboard Compression Test Results Mean. Results vary depending on whether the outboard is a Four-Stroke or a Two-Stroke. Good results for Four-Strokes should be 180-210 PSI, and Two-Strokes should be around 110-130 PSI. more

Environment: Aluminium anodes carry a better environmental footprint than zinc anodes. Aluminium anode alloys do not contain cadmium, which is harmful to the marine population. Cost: Aluminium anodes are less expensive, taking into account the significantly reduced weight requirement compared with zinc. [links]

Zincs should be replaced when about half of the anode has been lost to corrosion. Ideally we want that to occur not more frequently than annually. The longevity of a sacrificial zinc anode is a function of its weight. When a zinc lasts less than a year, you need one with more weight.

For Mercury outboards, transom and gearcase anodes can typically be found in the Gear Housing, Transom Bracket or Power Trim parts diagrams. For Evinrude outboards, transom and gearcase anodes can typically be found in the Gearcase or Exhaust Housing parts diagram (look for Tab Kit).

As soon you encounter any bad stator sign, immediately disconnect the engine’s batteries and spark plug wires. Do not start any further inspection or tests before that. more

Check whether the woodruff key is in place or not, and install the flywheel, battery cables again. Make sure you have followed each route correctly. [links]

Bad Stator symptoms may vary based on the engine or motor type and sometimes become hard to figure out.

If needed, replace the stator and for that first, remove the flywheel. Since you have already disconnected all the stator connecting wires, remember every step and route. [links]
