Most Tecumseh engines require an advanced timing, which must be set using a TDC dial depth gauge. Some gauges allow the pistons TDC to be verified with the engine head on. It's done thru the spark plug hole. more

The car's timing refers to the ignition and the process by which the spark plugs fire, creating a spark in the car's combustion chamber. Your timing must be at the correct setting for your car to perform at top level, affecting the speed and efficiency at which the engine fires. You can adjust your car's timing with a timing light and a set of wrenches, tools available at any auto parts store.

Loosen the points screw and use a flathead screwdriver to turn them open and closed until the air gap is .020". Once you have them in the correct position, tighten the points back down. here

When inserting the dial indicator, make sure the foot goes towards the piston and stays that way. Screw the collar into the spark plug hole. [links]

You're now ready to set the backwards rotation to the specified position. For this engine (HS40), the recommended position is .035" before TDC. I just rolled it backwards a tiny bit until it read .035"

The process is really simple, but has to be really precise. more

TIP: Before you put your flywheel back on, I suggest you check the magnets for debris. I won't mention any names, but someone had a horrible experience trying to get their engine to run because the flywheel key was stuck to the magnet  [links]

Finally, now that your points are set correctly, loosen up your stator bolts and rotate it to the left until the points are barely open. I was told that a lot of guys use an ohm meter for this, but if you've got good eyes and good lighting, you can see the gap. Once you get it positioned just right, you're ready to tighten it down and put the flywheel back on.

How do you time engine? The mounting flange gasket was bad so I replaced it, while doing so the camshaft fell out i was unsure where the timing mark was. So I rolled the crankshaft timing mark to align with the dot and hobbing hole on the camshaft.I had my thumb over the spark plug hole while pulling on the starter rope. I could feel tdc. Put it all together, mounted engine on mower deck, screwed in spark plug, gas in tank, oil in crakcase, push primer bulb, holdhandle down, pulled rope. The rope pulled VERY hard I thought It was gonna rip my arm off! It will pull nice without the sparkplug in it. I have good spark too Nice and Blue I can arc about .05 inchs This has solid-state ignition.Timing is not correct! How do-or- what do i align the timingmarks?? pse help! here
