Then flip the drift boat over so the open deck is facing the ground and the bottom is facing up and place the boat on the blocks/pallets. Doin this not only totally eliminates the problem of water-fill from heavy rain but it ensures that any water that falls on the boat cover will be channeled down towards the ground and will not sit on the boat cover. It also ensures ground damp does not penetrate the boat. [links]

Summer rain causes just as much problems as winter rain just in smaller amounts. Although it probably doesn’t rain as much in your locality in the summer it probably rains sometimes. more

Drift are becoming more popular across the country. Once only the preserve and pride of Oregon many Americans are being lured by the charm, durability and functionality of this inland dory boat. But with its open deck and large shape where and how should you store your drift boat?

Because a drift boat has evolved from the humble open water fishing dory, traditional drift boats were made of wood thus being bulkier and heavier than other small inland boats, like a Jon boat for example. However modern drift boats are available in both fiberglass and aluminum and are considerably lighter than their dory ancestors. Even homemade wooden drift boats are usually constructed from lightweight plywood.

Great Britain's Women's Pair (-) in the 2014 World Rowing Championships. Rowing sweeps in a pair requires great balance and harmony between the rowers.

The rowers at Bow and 2 are usually a bit smaller than the others in the boat, while 3,4,5, and 6 are often bigger. Those four seats are sometimes called the ‘engine room’ in an eight. here

At the Olympics everyone rows the same course: 2,000 metres in a straight line with buoyed lanes. [links]

At the other end of the fleet sits the single sculler — that solitary figure holding the handles of two sculls above a fragile shell that’s about 7.5m–8m long (25ft–27ft), 30cm wide and weighs less than a foot or so wide, and weighs around 18kg (less than 40 pounds). This sculler does the rowing, steering, and tactics all alone. Although balance, accuracy of motion, and rhythm are important in all shells, the smaller the shell the more important they all are — and the single is the smallest and most sensitive to mistakes. here

You're holding the handle of an oar that's over 3.5m (12ft) long. You're sitting on a seat that slides back and forth, and your feet are strapped in place. You and all your colleagues are extremely fit, and that's a good thing, because you intend to row this boat in a straight line for 2,000 metres as fast as it can be rowed, which might approach 14 miles per hour.

During the boating months, however, washing away salt and grime with a gentle but high-quality boat soap—after each and every outing—is imperative. While harsher soaps and cleaners can do a better job on tough stains, they also remove that protective wax and eventually lead to a dull gelcoat shine. Use them sparingly, only as necessary. Whenever you scrub gelcoat, make sure you use a soft brush or sponge on the smooth areas to avoid scratching (Yes, a stiff-bristle brush can actually create tiny scratches in the gelcoat). Non-skid surfaces can be cleaned with a more aggressive brush if needed.

Once you’ve got your gelcoat clean and in tip-top shape, it should be maintained with a coat of wax at least twice a season. Consider performing this task before you launch in the spring, and prior to putting your boat to bed for the winter. That way you can make the most of your boat during the season instead of being burdened by maintenance work.

Most of these components are made of teak, a durable tropical hardwood. Left in the sun teak will grey out and last for years, but it still needs occasional cleaning. Other owners prefer their woodwork to give off the warm, golden glow a good varnish, oil, or sealer provides. Which one you chose will depend on how much upkeep you’re willing to do.

Of course if you plan on sailing onto your anchor (not using a motor) there are a few extra steps. here

Whether you are headed out for the day, weekend or season, the basic techniques for anchoring do not change much. The vast majority of the time you will be relying on only one or two of the techniques outlined above. Anchoring is an individualistic activity and everybody has their own personal preferences that have been refined over time. But at its heart anchoring is pretty routine and doesn’t have to be overly complicated.

The size and type of anchor you will need is primarily based on three elements: boat weight, windage and bottom condition. Each anchor manufacturer has a sizing guide based on your boat type and displacement, so it’s best too look them up individually. Here are the anchor sizing guides for Rocna, Manson, Lewmar (CQR, Delta), Danforth, and Fortress.

Learning how to anchor a boat in swell can be challenging if the wind is coming from another direction. Depending on the conditions we use two techniques for anchoring in swell. Primarily we set a stern anchor to keep our bow pointed roughly 15 degrees off the swell; as we have found this to be the most comfortable position. Sometimes in less challenging conditions we will set a winch bridle. here
