If your neutral safety switch has failed completely then you will need to get a new one. The cost of replacing a neutral safety switch varies between make, model, and year of your vehicle. On average it's going to cost you between about $150 and $400 to get a new neutral safety switch in your vehicle. That includes parts and labour. [links]

Even though most drivers are not aware of the neutral safety switch in exactly what it does in the vehicle, as you can see it's clearly an important part of how your vehicle operates and overall vehicle safety. Its job is a simple one, but without it you're at risk of something potentially serious accidents that could cost you a lot of money on repairs not to mention the potential for injury or even death if something goes terribly wrong.

You have to put your car in the correct gear to get it started. Your car will typically only start when it's in park or neutral and that's a safety feature of the vehicle. You wouldn't want to start your car in first gear because you would jolt forward suddenly and potentially cause an accident, right? The neutral safety switch is the part of your vehicle that prevents that from happening.

This is a very bad sign that you don't want to experience. If your engine is able to crank no matter what gear you're in, even if you're actually running the car already, there's definitely a problem with the electronics in your neutral safety switch. This is just as useless as having no neutral safety switch whatsoever in your vehicle. You're at a high risk of having accidents if this is the case because there's nothing stopping your vehicle from moving at any point in time. more

You can consider the neutral safety switch in an automatic transmission a little bit like the clutch in a manual transmission . If you've never driven a manual, you have to engage the clutch in order to start the vehicle. If you don't do this, it's just not going to work. The neutral safety switch takes that job in the automatic transmission and does it for you rather than making you physically engage the switch yourself.

When the neutral safety switch is working and electrical current goes for the ignition switch to the engine starter to start the whole ignition process. If you're not in the correct gear, the neutral safety switch prevents that from happening. That means your spark plugs will be unable to spark, and you can't ignite the air-fuel mixture in your engine and in turn you simply cannot start your car.

The functionality of the neutral safety switch has changed greatly through the automotive development era, what was once a simple switch for the reverse lights and starter safety circuits, this switch has now become a multi-function gear position sensor which provides feedback data to the body and engine computers, all related functions are then carried through the operating system. The neutral safety switch disables the starter operation when the vehicles transmission is not in neutral or park, and are equipped on automatic transmission vehicles only. A standard transmission car utilizes and clutch safety switch in place of the neutral safety switch which accomplishes the same objective. When a neutral safety switch fails it can cause the starter or reverse lights not to operate. Other complications can occur if a loose connection exists near the wiring connector, confirm this connection by removing the connector and reconnecting it.

Tip : If the starter is not working when the vehicle is in park, try pushing down on the brake pedal and putting the transmission in neutral, this will bypass the park circuit of the switch allowing the starter to operate if the park circuit has failed. here

Step 1 - Identify the neutral safety switch which is located on the left side of the transmission and controls engine starter operation along with reverse lights and gear selection feedback data used by the computer.

Step 2 - Obtain a wiring diagram used to trace wires which enables continuity testing. This switch uses a simple grounding procedure to individual circuits when the switch is activated. Search Google images or an online service manual such as Mitchell1 to obtain such diagram. more

Step 3 - Using a test light will enable the circuit testing by piercing the wires to confirm a connection through the switch.

The neutral safety switch was first used in the 1980s, in the backdrop of numerous cases in which children left alone in cars turned the key and sent the car speeding forward.

► A malfunctioning switch may misjudge which gear the transmission is in. This enables the engine to be turned on when in gear, and also shows an incorrect transmission selection on the dash. here

A neutral safety switch is a mechanism that prevents the car engine from turning on when the transmission is in gear. It allows the engine to start only if the gearshift is in the ‘park’ or ‘neutral’ position. Without this switch, the engine would start whenever the key is turned in the ignition, and if the transmission was left in gear, this could make the vehicle shoot out from a stationary position, possibly injuring the occupant and/or whoever is near the car. In some models, the neutral safety switch is also responsible for turning on the back-up lights while reversing.

As you can see, this is usually a very affordable replacement job to get done. The cost of the part is cheap and since it doesn’t take long for the mechanic to perform the replacement, their labor costs will be cheap too. more
