To some, this might sound like a fairly straightforward question, but what we really mean by this is: how do you turn your boiler on/off safely? With older gas boilers, for instance, they can be temperamental as is, so failing to switch them on and off securely can be dangerous.

Whilst turning off the heating can be as simple as finding the control panel and turning the dial to the off position, or simply finding the mains switch, there are extra steps you should take in order to shut down your boiler completely.

If you have a modern combi boiler, then the hot water is supplied directly, so closing the mains stop valve will shut it off. On the other hand, if you’re wondering how to turn off a gas boiler that has a separate hot water cylinder, find the supply valve on the pipe from the water tank/cylinder itself and turn it off. This ensures that no extra fluid leaks into the system. more

If you can't isolate the water heater and can't turn the water back on check the water pressure in the boiler there should be a gage on the boiler.

There is A isolation valve commonly installed on the cold water pipe supplying your water heater. Turn that valve off. If there is a shut off on the hot water supply then go ahead and close that one too.If not . Thats ok. Then go back and turn the water main to the house back on.

The boiler pressure should be between 10-25 psi depending on the water temp. 12-15 psi is ideal.

If your between 10-25 your ok for the night. Shut the water off going into the boiler water feeder. Probably a small 1/2 copper pipe

There are two basic ways of laying up boilers: wet and dry. In storing a boiler dry, trays of moisture-absorbing chemicals are distributed in the boiler drum (or drums), and the boiler is sealed. This removes the moisture and prevents premature wear on the boiler tubes that may cause future pitting and leaks. The alternate method, wet storage, involves forcing air out of the boiler by completely filling it (to overflowing) with water that has been specially treated. Nitrogen gas under a slight pressure can also be used to displace air and “blanket” the boiler open surfaces. Special consideration should be given to protecting superheaters during lay-up, particularly the non-drainable type, see your operating manual is this is your case.

3. Alternatively, maintain a positive pressure of 5 psig of nitrogen using a cylinder and a two-stage regulator. [links]

2. After the boiler has been taken out of service, blowdown several times from all blowdown outlets, including headers, making up with hot deaerated feedwater. Follow the boiler manufacturer’s instructions for taking the boiler out of service. Never use cold water to cool the boiler as leaks in rolled joints will develop. When the boiler is cool enough to get into the furnace, drain the boiler.

Gas boilers are one of the best ways to enjoy comfort through even the chilliest of winters. They are highly energy efficient and can last for many years.

Whether shutting down your boiler is a good idea or not depends on a couple of different factors. One of them is the type of boiler you have. Older boilers may still use pilot lights to ignite their burners, rather than the modern electronic ignition systems. If your boiler is older than 10 years, it may use a pilot light, and you probably already know if it does. This flame consumes natural gas whether the boiler comes on or not, so we recommend shutting off the boiler if it uses a standing pilot light. There’s a valve on the gas line to the pilot light, and if you turn it 90°F it will cause the pilot light to go off and cut off gas to the system.

This is important. If you think your boiler has some kind of malfunction, even if it’s apparently minor and isn’t affecting its heating performance, don’t ignore it and have the boiler go into summer hibernation this way. What may seem like a “small” problem could only be the tip of the iceberg, and it might end up causing leaks or other problems over the summer, or lead to a system that won’t work when you actually need it again. And it could present a safety hazard. Have professionals repair your boiler, no matter how close the warm weather is. here
