I like to give motors a good shake when verticle to help get all the water out. also if you have a "flush" plug on your lower unit you can remove this a let a little bit of water out.
The very first step is to add a fuel system treatment such as Sea Foam or Stabil to the fuel. Then connect the flusher, turn on the water and run the engine until you are certain the treated fuel has had a chance to find its way into the engine. A 5 to 10 minute run would suffice. Next, change the lower unit lube. Start the engine and then fog it. Spray the fogging oil into the air intake ports until the engine dies. Remove the plugs and give each cylinder an additiional shot. Install the plugs. Remove the flusher. Leave the engine down so all water can drain. Outboards are self draining as long as they sit perfectly vertical. Put a good coat of wax on the engine, like you would your car, cover it if you wish and you are done. You can change fuel filters now or in the spring when you refire the engine. After the engine is run in the spring, you might install new plugs but it's not necessary unless they are well used.

You can also spin the motor around once without any water and plugs disconnected(don't even think about starting it) to help expell it.'
It would all drain out on the ground, as the engines are self draining. here
I'm not dumb enough to spend gas money on something that's unneeded. Why do marine outlets sell outboard winterizing kits? Because people like you won't listen and buy them. And don't forget the antifreeze, 5 gallons at 6-10 bucks each or more for roughly a hundred clams with shipping. What did P.T. Barnum say? here
West marine will sell you a winterizing kit for anything. Inboard, outboard, refrigerator, water system, etc. They would sell you a winterizing kit for your wife if you so desired.

Check engine oil and replace oil filter every 100 hours of use, or annually (whichever comes first).

I have a 90 HP Mercury 4 Stroke that I would like to do an oil change on. My problem is i have heard different opinions from several people. I will run the boat till freeze up (Walleye Fishing). Some say run any brand 10W30 cause of the cold temperature while others say run Mercuy 25W40 synthetic blend but wonder if thats too thick for cold temperatures. I am not sure and looking for the right oil as I don't want to wreck any bearings as well as the motor is under warranty still as i bought it new this passed fall. here

i called yesterday and what i was told was this. if running the motor in temps below 40 degress to run 10w30 and if mainly over 40 degress than 25w40. i also asked about what oil to use and was told of course being a mercury employee on the phone he can't recommend anything other than quicksilver and mercury. so i told him i work at Napa and that i wanted to run Kendell oil and if i chose to what are the chances of Mercury knowing there oil was not used in the motor and his response was slim to none. he just really strongly recommend using the Mercury filter. i never thought of asking for his name but i know the time i called. anyways i also spoke to my dealer i bought it from and he straight up told me that if i took it to him to have the oil change done he would use 10w30 in it so that kinda tells me its fine as he would be dealing with my warranty.
