Well like I said I?m working through a similar issue with my 150 Black max EFI motor but I?m not an outboard expert by any stretch of the imagination. So with that being said I think the issue might be in the pump regardless of the fact that it?s new. If it cools down when you?re running you?re forcing water through the cooling system so I would have to say that there isn?t any restriction in the system. [links]
The 135/150 motors will run about 145-150 at idle and 130-140 at cruise in 60 deg water. [links]
What do you mean by heating issues? Is the alarm going off? Or are you getting a high gauge reading? I believe your motor does not start to **** until the thermostats open. So if you?re feeling the stream of water being discharged and it?s hot that would be normal. If the thermostats open at say 140 then the water being discharged is going to be 140.
One typical mistake is to leave the slinger washer off. This is the one that looks like a garden hose washer and slides over the drive shaft ending up on top of the water pump housing. If you don't put it on, water floods the mid. here
Dave, it sure sounds to me like its the water pump. That gasket kit comes with a bunch of different gaskets. The parts catalog shows which ones to use for your pump. Sometimes it's difficult to tell but if you put the wrong one on, it will fit but you won't pump water like you should.
Just to confuse things, there was also a 'Bass' 150 Merc XR2 sold here. 2L, reputed to be stronger than the regular 2L 150.
I thought they were cast iron bore engines. Are you sure? more
just to help you out a little bit ,it is a mercury racing xr2 nowhere does it mention 150 hp.it is from mercury racing,:eek:
I'm thinking about buying a 20' bowrider that's powered by a 1991 or 1992 (can't recall at the moment) Mercury Black Max 150. The owner told me that the engine has been "jetted up to a 175". Therefore, in his mind, it's a 175.

He also stated that it "runs a little rich at idle because of the oil injection" (which is still intact). I thought the oil injection leaned out the mixture to 100:1 at idle. Is this incorrect?

Gentlemen,
There's about a dozen times I've posted the oil alert removal procedure on this forum. Use search and go find it.
The ignition module spark signal, usually for cylinder 2, is one input for the oil alert. It can set off the alarm.
To remove the alarm, just remove it. Leave the temp sensor wiring in place. In other words, remove the wire from the oil alert module from the terminal strip and put the screw and the other 2 wires back.
The sevice manual covers the oil alert system thoroughly and systematically.

So what you are saying is to disconnect the green wire from the switch box, the 2 wires to the rotational sensor and the 1 wire from the oil tank cap and the oil alarm will stop without disabling the over heat alarm.
