Hi all, the depth sounder on my fiberglass bowrider seems to have flaked out. the gauge is getting power, but the depth reading frequently disappears, or flashes nonsensical depths. After checking for good connections and not finding any problems, I'm thinking it's time to replace.

What are the comparative differences between these? The shoot-thru-hull model is attractive because it doesn't involve drilling any holes thru the hull, but trying to get at good spots in the bilge is not easy for me (I'm a fairly big guy and there's not much room back there. ). Also, the boat lives on a trailer and it's a 2.5 hour round trip to the nearest boating grounds, so the whole process of fitting the shoot-thru-hull transducer (sandbagging it in place in the bilge, covering with water, testing, etc.) would be a bit of a pain. more

My question has to do with transducers. The current transducer is a shoot thru the hull type, mounted in the in bilge under the engine. In looking at new transducer models, it seems that my choices are to get another shoot thru the hull model, a transom-mounted model or a thru-hull mounted transducer.

I'm sure you've all seen my posts about buying a fish finder. now that I have it picked out, I have the option of thru hull or transom mount transducer. The thru hull is more expensive than the transom mount, which leads me to believe, maybe it's better quality or better for the fish finder.

The second reason is that most boats of this size and larger will have more of the hull in "clean" water. By "clean" I mean that you have a nice flow with no air bubbles or turbulent flow. Bubbles and turbulence with cause the transponder to give funny or messed up readings. more

I tried searching threads for this topic but I couldn't find any.

I like thru hull installations for a couple of reasons. First less exposed wiring. With a transom mount you will have to route the wire through the hull at some point, usually high in the transom or up over the transom into a splashwell opening. I hate drilling holes in my boat. Second I think they read better at speed. At speed, the water under the center of the stern is about as turbulence free as you can get. True, you can usually eventually get a transom mount to read well, but the water flowing off the hull creates a lot of disturbance and it?s tough to get just the right height where the transducer is in the water, but not creating a lot of spray. Many will say that a transducer in the water is more sensitive and will show more detail than one receiving the signal through 3/8? of fiberglass, but both of my through hull installations seem to show as much detail as my last transom mount installation. more

If it was a trailer boat I'd probably go thru hull. [links]

People spend thousands of dollars on boats and gear. Why do they go cheap on transducers ?
Picked up the Furuno FCV 600L used for $300.

Side note: Please find humor in this next statement, not aggression. You accuse people of cheaping out on transducers (Very true, I'm not contesting that!) and then you mention a used sonar unit that was cutting edge 15 years ago.

Thur hull is the way to go. pocket mounted or tilted element. here
