Here are seven innovative inventions that are also doing their share in reducing oceanic plastic waste.
In Ghana, for example, GPAP is working with technology giant SAP to create a group of more than 2,000 waste pickers and measuring the quantities and types of plastic that they collect. This data is then analysed alongside the prices that are paid throughout the value chain by buyers in Ghana and internationally.
Ocean Action Hub reports on two ventures that are trying to turn this waste into something useful. California-based startup, Bureo – which has found a way to turn this waste into desirable products including skateboards and sunglasses – is literally closing the net on the problem. here

He first produced microplastics to remove from the water and then extracted them using his method. Ten of the most common microplastics were used for the experiment.
The procedure, inspired by an article written by physicist Arden Warner, involves using non-toxic iron oxide to clean up oil spills, according to Ferreira's project study. When he tested the method on water containing a known concentration of microplastics, the plastic particles migrated into the oil phase, and the fluid was able to be removed using strong magnets, he wrote in his project synopsis.
A teen from Ireland may have found the solution to rid world's oceans from the microplastics that are near impossible to remove.
Fionn Ferreira, 18, designed a new method for the extraction of microplastics, or particles of plastic less than 5 millimeters in diameter, as part of the Google Science Fair, an online competition open to students between the ages of 13 and 18.
The SeaBin, created by two Australian surfers, is a bucket with a pump and water filtration system that is designed to suck debris from any marina or dock. The bucket includes an optional oil-water separator system that will pull oil right out of the ocean, then spit out cleaner water through the other side of the pump.
Surfers spend a great deal of their lives floating in the ocean, so it makes sense that they would also be responsible for a brilliant yet simple invention that literally sucks pollution out from the water’s surface. [links]
While these solutions won’t entirely solve the world’s pollution problem ― real change can only happen when humans drastically change their consumption and plastic production habits ― the projects featured below are a good place to start. [links]
Owners of the technology are still developing their prototype, but a small number of SeaBins have been installed at marinas around the world, including San Diego and Finland. The product is expected to go on sale to the public later this year, according to Business Insider. more
