Mastercraft are wonderful ski and wakeboarding boats. The boat you're looking at is 18 years old, and 61 hours per year is not necessarily high usage. Inboard engines and drivelines will last a long time if properly cared for. here
The key with that many hours would be to have someone do a compression test on the V8. That's the only way to get a good sense of the health of the V8. more
On any older fiberglass boat, the condition of the boat hull under the fiberglass is what to worry about. You should have the engine, transmission and transmission fully checked out by an experienced inboard marine mechanic. This would include a complete engine analysis--compression, vacuum test, etc. [links]

1998 MASTERCRAFT 225 VRS MARISTAR SKI- WAKEBOARD BOAT. THIS BOAT IS TRULY THE CLEANEST AND BEST TAKEN CARE OF BOAT I HAVE EVER SEEN FOR A 1998. IF YOU WEREN'T THE OWNER, YOU WOULD THINK IT WAS ONLY A FEW YEARS OLD, IF THAT. THIS BOAT DOES NOT HAVE ALL OF THE TYPICAL WEAR AND TEAR THAT YOU SEE ON MOST EVERY OTHER BOAT OUT THERE. THIS IS NOT A BOAT THAT ONLY LOOKS GOOD IN THE PICTURES AND THEN WHEN YOU GO AND LOOK AT IT, IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURES. THIS BOAT IS A 9 OUT OF A 10- AND 10 BEING BRAND NEW. THIS BOAT LOOKS EVERY BIT AS GOOD IN PERSON AS IT DOES IN THE PICTURES- IF NOT BETTER. THIS MASTERCRAFT HAS ALWAYS BEEN KEPT INSIDE DRY STORAGE. I AM THE THIRD OWNER AND WE USED IT ALL SUMMER. IT PERFORMED EXCEPTIONAL, JUST LIKE A NEW $85,000 MODEL WOULD. THE 225 VRS IS A VERY NEAT BOAT AS IT IS 23' LONG AND IS EXTREMELY ROOMY INSIDE. THE ENGINE AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT ARE MOUNTED IN THE REAR ON THE VRS, WHICH GIVES YOU A HUGE REAR SUNDECK PAD, LARGE U SHAPED INTERIOR SEATING, AND NO CENTER MOUNTED ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO HAVE TO MESS WITH. THE SUNDECK ALSO HAS A POWER RAISE/CLOSE OPTION THAT COVERS THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.THE TANDEM MASTERCRAFT BUILT TRAILER HAS YOUR TYPICAL ROCK CHIPS. THERE IS ONE SMALL PIECE ON THE LEFT FIBERGLASS FENDER THAT IS TORN, BUT OVERALL IT IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE FOR A 1998. THE TIRES ONLY HAVE 500 OR SO MILES ON THEM AND NO DRY ROT. THE BUNKS ARE ALL IN GREAT SHAPE. ALL OF THE LIGHTS WORK, ETC.MASTERCRAFT IS VERY QUALITY BOAT MANUFACTURER, AND IN MY OPINION, THE BEST. THEY HOLD THEIR VALUES VERY WELL AND ARE QUALITY MADE. THIS BOAT IS NO EXCEPTION. THERE WERE TWO ENGINE OPTIONS FOR THIS MODEL. ONE WAS A 340HP CORVETTE ENGINE AND THE SECOND WAS A 308 HP VORTEC ENGINE, BOTH OPTIONS ARE FUEL INJECTED. THIS BOAT HAS THE 308 HP VORTEC FUEL INJECTED V DRIVE ENGINE. IT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH POWER FOR THIS BOAT AND IT GETS FABULOUS GAS MILEAGE. THIS BOAT WILL PULL ANYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO TOW BEHIND IT WHILE PROVIDING A FABULOUS MASTERCRAFT WAKE.THE FUEL INJECTED VORTEX ENGINE STARTS IMMEDIATELY AT THE TURN OF THE KEY. IT RUNS EXCELLENT WITH NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER. THERE ARE APPROX. 650 HOURS ON THE BOAT AND COMPONENTS, WHICH IS ONLY 35 HOURS PER YEAR FOR THIS BOAT. THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FLAWLESSLY EACH AND EVERY TIME. ALL OF THE GAUGES WORK AS THEY SHOULD, AS DOES ALL OF THE LIGHTING, STEREO, ETC. THE CURRENT WATER IMPELLER AND FILTERS ONLY HAVE 5 OR SO HOURS ON THEM. SO, THIS BOAT IS TRULY LAKE READY EVEN THROUGH NEXT SUMMER.100% OF THE UPHOLSTERY AND CARPETS WERE ALSO REPLACED TWO YEARS BACK. 1997 Mastercraft MARISTAR 225 VRS I have owned this boat since 1997 and kept it on a covered lift on Lake Austin. We sold our place a year ago and have it on a trailer in Houston. It is in great condition. And most important it only has 172 hours - yes it is not a typo. It puts out a good wake even with out any ballast. If you are looking for this particular type of boat there is no need for me to go into all of the details. But here are a few: Corvette LT1 Engine - well maintained - only use Mobil 1 and was serviced every 50 hours Mastercaft wakeboard tower Mastercraft trailer - only used to take the boat out of the water a couple of times - brand new tires (the original tires dry-rotted after being parked for so long) Sony stereo but blows fuse for some reason Total hours 172If you are looking for a great boat but not able to, or wanting to, spend $50 grand for a used boat or $100 grand for a new one, this is the one for you. more

Aside from the great interior configuration, MasterCraft also managed to maintain great skiing characteristics in the MariStar 225 VRS. While it doesn't fall into the same category as the tournament boats used by professional skiers running slalom courses, it does produce small wakes and is able to cut through sloppy conditions for a comfortable ride. more
The MariStar is all hand-laid fiberglass, including hull, deck, floor liner and stringer system. I have learned to appreciate the quality of MasterCraft construction and its attention to detail. In mounting areas for the engine, ski pylon, lifting eyes and the driver's bucket seat, 3/8 -inch steel plates are inlaid for extra support. The fit and finish is among the best in the business, and the boat is solid and sound throughout. MasterCraft offers a limited warranty on all structural components for as long as the original owner keeps the boat. here
They are designed for specific duties, typically running for long, hard hours doing a specific job better than anything else. The boats are dependable and efficient. But over the years, like pickups, they have refined their rides, altered their rugged image and added amenities to make them both look and feel more comfortable.
The MariStar has lots of storage. A big ski locker in the cockpit swallows up skis with ease. There are carpeted bins on either side of the engine and more storage is available under a bench, along the sides of the boat and in a lockable combination cooler/glove box. In addition, there are three compartments in the bow. here
