The wristwatches placed in this category are upgraded with added chronograph functions. The vintage styling and high quality materials are not pushed aside in favour of features. Three chronograph subdials and a date aperture join the clean lines of the automatic watch face. The 027-4120-01 remains closer to the traditional style origins of Junghans while the 027-4526-01 is given a modern colouring with it’s blue dial. [links]

The company was founded in 1961 by the pilot Helmut Sinn in the city Frankfurt am Main. Based on his biography as a pilot and aerobatic instructor, he initially produced mainly watches that are specifically tailored to the needs of pilots and flight instructors. In the meantime, the company has among other things, added diver's watches to the portfolio. Special chronographs and navigation watches can now also be found in the product range. Sinn sold his products right from the start through back then very innovative direct sales. Today you can buy Sinn watches online through their own website or in person at selected retailers. At Sinn, the functionality of the watches always comes first. An example would be the EZM 12, which was developed for air rescue services. Other exciting series include The Frankfurt Financial District, the 600 or the DZ EZM 3 with magnetic field protection.

The traditional company settled in Glashütte in 1845 with Ferdinand Adolph Lange and quickly began to establish Glashütte as a city of watchmaking. His watches are characterised by traditional craftsmanship and loving detail work, which helped him to gain international recognition beyond the German borders. In 1990, A. Lange & Söhne was re-founded by Walter Lange, a direct descendant of the company’s initial founder. With the help of Günther Blümlein, the president of IWC, A. Lange & Söhne was again able to establish itself as the most exclusive German watch manufacturer. Characteristic for many A. Lange & Söhne watches are an oversized date display and detailed elaborated complications as in the Lange 1 Time Zone. The regional roots of the company are also reflected in series such as the Saxonia.

Today a large part of the German watch industry is clustered within the small town Glashütte. The small town in Saxony has just over 7,000 inhabitants and is the production site for some of the most successful German watch manufacturers. Made in Germany is also in the watch industry an idiom for quality. In terms of precision, functionality and appearance, the designs from Germany are internationally competitive and often quite affordable. Especially small and medium-sized companies are currently located in Germany. Their models are often in the lower luxury segment, but at the same time guarantee a high level of craftsmanship. We have selected and put together our top 10 watchmakers from Germany.

The "perfect" watch should be as convenient, practical and accurate as possible. This notion largely drove watchmaking innovation for centuries, but as watches have taken on a luxury role in modern life, there are now only a few companies that invest in the technology that can genuinely realize such an ideal. We're not talking about watches that do what a smartphone or computer does, but those that use the latest technology to autonomously deliver the best possible timekeeping experience.

There are now also systems that use GPS satellites and the internet to keep your watches and other devices more or less synched with atomic clocks anywhere on the planet, but Junghans' story remains compelling: In 1985, five years before the Mega 1, the brand released the "first radio-controlled, series production table clock for private use" and followed it up a year later with a solar-charging version. These features combined in the Mega Solar wristwatch in 1993 and are part of the brand's lineup today in a modern form. [links]

This is a field dominated by the big Japanese companies — Seiko, Citizen and Casio — each of which has vast resources for research, development and production. But tucked away in the Black Forest of Germany, the 160-year-old brand Junghans is quietly developing its own tech like quartz movements with radio-synching and solar charging. Not only do they continue to offer something interesting and unique today, but they pioneered the radio-controlled watch with the Junghans Mega 1 back in 1990.
