Hey guys I know this sounds dumb but I recently got given a mercury 50HP blueband motor, I've just started it for the first time using 2-stroke, the engine seemed to blow a ridiculous amount of smoke when running the 2-stroke however when I tried with 4 stroke there was no smoke and it ran like a dream.

However Im still unsure whether it was just the 2-stroke mix or whether the engine is four stroke,, I've looked around the engine but cant seem to find another oil filling area so I presume 2-stroke and the initial mix was wrong but I have no idea.

Once again its a 1983 (i believe) 50HP blueband mercury engine and the engine number is:
8055862

Likewise, people ask, is it normal for a 2 stroke to smoke? more

What does white smoke on a 2 stroke mean? [links]

Also, why does my outboard smoke? Boat motors, especially two-strokes, commonly smoke because of an improper fuel to oil ratio or when the motor runs rich on fuel. When this happens, excessive blue-tinged smoke will come out the exhaust port, indicating too much oil is burning directly in the combustion chamber. more

In conclusion, it's normal for your 2-stroke to smoke a lot until you get on it and clear it out. It shouldn't take more than one trip through the gears to clear it out. Afterwards, there should be minimal smoke but you may still have some depending on conditions. here

This process is a repetitive action, and as the crankshaft is attached to the other moving parts of the engine, it causes them to move.

However, to get a clearer idea of which of these two types of outboards would be more suitable, you need to understand the difference between the two. But let’s first take a quick look at how an internal combustion engine works:

Knowing how they work is half the battle to help you get the best outboard engine for you.

According to Moody, he gets more power and torque from his two-stroke outboard as compared to a four-stroke engine of equivalent rating. [links]
