El Refugio de Vida Silvestre los Guatuzos-Papaturro fue declarado el primer humedal de importancia mundial de Nicaragua como sitio RAMSAR, alberga una gran cantidad de especies de flora y fauna, cuenta con un centro ecológico y un albergue comunitario, gracias a su gran biodiversidad silvestre podrás realizar senderos acuáticos y terrestres, donde visitarás un mariposario, un tortuguero y un caimanario. Se encuentra ubicado en la costa sur del lago, sobre la ribera del río Papaturro, a 45 kms. de San Carlos. [links]
En los mamíferos los más representativos son los venados, guardatinajas, cusucos, cerdos de monte, pisotes, monos congo, perezosos, osos hormigueros, nutrias o perro de agua, guatusas, murciélagos; también se encuentran jaguares. Dada la presencia de pantanos, ríos y del Lago Cocibolca, los peces son particularmente exuberantes, encontrando especies como gaspares, guapotes, mojarras, guabinas, róbalos, machacas, roncadores y tilapias. here
El uso del suelo está orientado principalmente hacia la actividad agrícola, labores a la cual se dedica la mayor parte de la población, aprovechando una diversificación de cultivos como granos básicos (maíz, arroz, fríjol), y cultivos perennes (cacao, naranja, musáceas), esta actividad agrícola es tan importante que representa el sector primario del municipio. La segunda actividad de importancia en el municipio es la ganadería. [links]
Otra de las islas reconocidas por ser el hábitat y el único lugar del archipiélago donde se encuentran manadas de monos congos, es la isla El Padre o islas Los Monos. Un lugar ideal para hacer avistamiento de aves es la Isla Zapote conocida también como Isla de los Pájaros por la variedad de especies de aves que habitan en ella.
San Carlos es un municipio bastante húmedo, con una precipitación máxima de 2,400 mm. y una precipitación mínima de 2,000 mm., que se distribuyen en un período de nueve meses que va de mayo a enero y el período de verano es de tres meses.
San Carlos tiene una hidrografía bien dinámica, sus recursos hídricos superficiales son abundantes, particularmente por la presencia del Lago Cocibolca, entre los principales ríos tenemos el Río San Juan, al sur del municipio y por la región norte los afluentes del margen izquierdo de dicho río, entre los que se destacan: Melchora, Medio Queso, Palo de Arco, Pizote, Viejo, Papaturro, Saíno, Zapote, Río Frío y Estero Boca Negra. here

Volunteer Opportunity: Our first week we parked 1 bike, the second week 6 bikes and the third week 36 bikes. If that trend continues (x 6 each week) we’ll be parking 216 bikes this Sunday, Oct 4, 2020. While that might overly might optimistic, just in case, we‘d love a few more bike parking volunteers, especially from 12-2pm. It’s essentially a bike party and it’s BYOBicycle–what could be better?!
