Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped). more

Take the hood off and study the gearshift linkage. You will see a flat lever that pulls up a thin rod as you shift. That rod has a collar, retained by a setscrew, at its' bottom end (outside, by the tilt lock hooks that grab the tilt pin.) You will have to adjust that collar up or down on the rod so that it releases the hooks in neutral and forward, but locks them in reverse. But it's kind of futile if your motor has broken rubber motor mounts. more

Thank you for your prompt reply, In examining the gearshift linkage, I see that the assembly mainly forces you to start only in the "Start" position, which is slightly more throttle than the "Shift" position. Not fond of this feature, as I find that slightly more throttle coaxes a cold motor to start easier. [links]

When you have the motor tilted up, you need ". a lever on the other side that says "Tilt" in one position and "Lock" in the other. ". That releases the tilt so that you can let the motor down if it is working correctly. [links]

You should be able to tilt in neutral, if not, shift to forward and try it. The control is a wire that looks like a bicycle wheel spoke that runs to the lock down the center of the bracket. here
