Here's what a real outboard looks like inside: more

Photo: A typical outboard motor on the back of a scuba diver's RIB (rigid inflatable boat). The propeller at the bottom of the motor "screws" through the water to push you along (that's why propellers are sometimes called screws).

If you've read our article on car engines, you'll know that they produce motion by burning gasoline with oxygen in metal cylinders. The cylinders have sliding pistons that push a crank around and the crank drives a shaft that (eventually) powers the wheels. Much the same happens in an outboard motor. The main difference is that there are usually fewer cylinders, operating in either a two-stage or four-stage cycle. Instead of driving a gearbox, the motor powers a propeller. To steer a boat with an outboard motor, you simply tilt the whole motor casing so the propeller pushes the water away from it at an angle. (Some outboards you can tilt by hand; others are steered by turning a steering wheel that tilts the motor using hydraulic cables.) You can go faster by opening up the throttle so the outboard burns more fuel and turns over more quickly.

Photo: Outboard motors are perfect for powering a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) like this. Unlike a car engine, which is often at the front, outboards are always at the back. That's because they need to create a backward-pushing draft of water to push a boat forward (an example of Newton's third law of motion).

Outboard motors come in both electric and gasoline powered versions. The electric versions are generally smaller and provide less horsepower in exchange for a quieter ride. They are beneficial for smaller watercraft, or for fishing to limit noise that may scare away fish. Gasoline powered outboard motors, on the other hand, are louder but are able to provide much more power. They start as low as two or three horsepower for small craft and can reach well into the hundreds to power large fishing boats. Another possibility for increased power is for a boat to have multiple outboards. It's not uncommon to see a large fishing boat powered by two or even four outboard motors all connected to the same steering wheel. more

Outboard motors are used to propel boats through the water at speeds faster than any set of oars. The motors come in a variety of power levels used for everything from small rowboats to large fishing boats, though they all share the similar trait of being self-contained propulsion systems attached to a boat.

For the gasoline powered outboard motors there are both two and four stroke engines. Four stroke engines provide a cleaner and smoother ride, while two stroke engines are generally more powerful but noisier and contribute more pollution. Some bodies of water only allow the cleaner and quieter four stroke engines, and the trend is towards the four stroke models in the future. High performance speed boats, on the other hand, benefit greatly from the extra power, so two strokes are always the preferred choice.

Outboard motors provide steering by literally turning themselves. Some have a built in rudder to direct water flow even when the propeller is not turning. On larger craft, the motors are sometimes attached to a steering wheel to provide the necessary power to turn such large motors. Smaller outboard motors often have a lever that the boat operator turns by hand to direct the engine and the boat.

Divide the number of gallons by the mix ratio for the motor use. While a 5-horsepower motor is unlikely to be subjected to racing conditions, the racing mix is 25 parts gasoline to 1 part oil--a full 5-gallon container, 640 ounces, is properly mixed when you add 26 ounces of oil: 640/25=25.6, or 26 ounces. A similar mixture, 24 parts gasoline to 1 part oil, is required for two-stroke Evinrudes built between 1959 and 1963, a 20-to-1 mix is needed for older motors and a 50-to-1 mix for newer two-stroke motors, except those being broken in, which use a 25-to-1 mix, like a racing motor.

Set the gas can on the ground at the fuel dock and fill it with the proper grade of gasoline, 87 octane. Evinrude asserts that no benefit is gained from using a fuel with a higher octane rating. here

Mixing the fuel and oil for a 5-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor isn't an onerous task. A two-stroke 5-horsepower Evinrude motor, like all two-stroke motors, needs a mix of gas and oil in its gas tank, since it doesn't have a separate lubrication system. You know the capacity of the gas can you'll use to fuel the motor's gas tank and, with a little bit of arithmetic, you can figure out how much oil to add to the fuel.

Add the appropriate amount of oil to the gasoline container. Cap the container and shake it vigorously to distribute the oil. Agitate the container again before pouring the oil into the boat's gas tank. here
