much safer that a light bulb, we've got 2 in my boat right now, one up under the bow by the heater, the other just on the floor by the pylon, the boat cover keeps the warm in, but it doesn't get that cold here in Seattle

While windchill does not change the temperature of a physical object - that is 27 degree air, be it stationary or 40mph wind will chill metal/water to 27 degrees. more

The rate at which it will chill metal/water to 27 degrees is influenced by the windchill factor - here

Park your vehicle near a wall or inside a carport or garage. Anything that blocks the wind helps to keep the engine warm. more

Cars have a harder time starting in cold weather. Contemporary vehicles crowd the engine compartment with accessories, and shield the engine with skid plates. The protection does provide a degree of insulation for cold weather. However, older vehicles have more space in the engine and are subject to the ill effects of cold temperatures. Keeping the engine warm in the winter helps to protect the vehicle from potential damage associated with cold starts while ensuring you are able to start the vehicle in winter.

Place a blanket on the engine beneath the hood. An electric blanket is ideal, but any blanket will work. Make sure the blanket covers the intake and sides of the engine. Remove the blanket before starting the vehicle. more

Cover your vehicle with a full-sized car cover. Tie the ends to the tires so that the cover hangs down and blocks wind from penetrating the engine compartment. here

Don’t: Don’t pull out your blankets at the last minute if they’ve been tightly bound all summer. If they smell musty or have mildew stains, have the time to wash or dry clean them. Also, don’t get slippery slippers—hard-soled slippers with non-skid will serve you well on that companionway.

Do: Do get a heater—or many. Reverse cycle, ceramic (electric) and gravity-fed diesel heaters will transform any boat from a cold cave to an inviting sanctuary. You may need to add another shore power connection if you plan to have multiple electric heaters and be sure to monitor your fuel tank so you don’t run out of diesel. For electric, make sure it’s the kind kind of heater that will turn off if it falls over. Numerous small and silent heaters are on the market, so boats of any size can become a pleasant hideaway even when the wind is howling outside.

Ah, the holidays—drinking mulled wine or eggnog by a toasty fire with twinkling lights. uh, hold on, hold on. If you’re staying aboard in December, there’s likely going to be no fire, there may be no hot wine and depending on your batteries, festive lighting may your headlamp. But be of good cheer, with a little preparation and ingenuity, there are many great ways to stay warm, dry and dazzled during this winter season.

Don’t: Don’t just plug in a bunch of electric heaters without reviewing your wiring—you don’t want to risk an electrical short and start a fire.

Do: Get a couple of oil lamps. Old school trawler lamps are terrific as they provide both light and heat without drawing on your battery bank or diesel tank. And with good, smokeless lamp oil, they’re clean and soot- and smell-free. Two lamps will add a delightful glow to any saloon and take the chill off as well. more
