Meanwhile, I finally found myself on board the Lagoon 440, which made one of the strongest impressions on me at the Miami boat show. The catamaran was supposed to go from the shipyard on its own to the Baleares, and I proceeded on it to La Caruna through Vizcay. Everything on board is amazing: the guys from Lagoon have outdone themselves. I’ve never seen anything like it. The words that came into my head to describe what I saw were more related to vocabulary related to houses and apartments, such as “ground floor”, “patio”, “two-story apartment” …

We have covered one hundred and seventy-seven miles since we left La Rochelle. Our journey proceeded on a calm sea and in great comfort … We had breakfast in the cabin overlooking the sea. Lag showed us 8 knots … [links]

At sunset, the breeze increased to 20 knots; with an angle to the wind of 130 degrees, our speed was 9 knots, and we felt some discomfort in handling. I climbed onto the flybridge and took the helm in my hands. At a speed of 10 knots, the steering wheel seemed to lose some sensitivity. I had fun playing with the waves, but I could not get the boat to the speedboat; more wind would be needed. here

Given that the Lagoon 440 catamaran is the first catamaran under the 45 feet range to have a flybridge to where all the sail-handling lines lead, it not only provides excellent visibility of all four sides of the vessel to the person on sails – allowing efficient and complete viewing of both the mainsails and the jibs – but also allows the same person to work the lines without leaving the helm. The bimini covering the helm station, however, is small and can be in want of a better enclosure to protect the rest of the crew. The flybridge is elevated enough to prevent the spraying of water while on passage but that does not mean it requires extra effort while docking as it is still to a level close enough to that of the deck. The helm station has the main steer in the center with mainsail winches behind and gauges and other three winches on the sides. here

In terms of space on the deck, the Lagoon 440 has been divided into three main parts, namely the flybridge helm, the aft cockpit, and the forward seating area. This allows for multiple spaces to be occupied by people on board without them interfering with one another. here

The Lagoon 440 catamaran has two Volvo Penta diesel engines of 40 horsepower each which are in separate, easily accessible compartments in the sugar scoops with enough room for engine checks and maintenance. The generator is placed in one of the lockers aft of the cabins and is well-insulated and soundproofed. [links]

The aft cockpit can be converted into a dining place with a table that can be stored in the ceiling storage compartment. There is not only plentiful storage space for non-perishables with storage cabinets running along the bench but the aft cockpit also houses a spare refrigerator. As previously mentioned, the cockpit is backed with a fiberglass enclosure and has two small windows that open into the helm and allow for ventilation. [links]

The 2010 Lagoon 440 is one of the most popluar yachts of its size. It offers a very comfortable design with spaces that give people plenty of room to spread out. This yacht is also outfitted with a water-maker and a clothes washer - nice for those Long Term Charters.

It has a raised helm station with bench seating, great visibility, and the convenience of having all the control lines within easy reach. This area is not just for the helmsman, the views enhance the pleasure of cruising for all aboard.

So, these are just some of the highlights of important differences between a boat purpose-built for live-aboard, offshore sailing, and one built for chartering. In addition to all of this, we believe that the best boat you will ever own is the one you design. We offer customized boats with choices just not available from other dealers or manufacturers. In the end, I typically do a 1-2 hour initial consult with you to discuss your choices. here

The beds are low and easy to get into. Each has a seriously large drawer under, and duffel bag sized shelves alongside. 2-3 opening hatches and ports enhance cross-flow ventilation. more

Also, uniquely, the electric toilet is in its own compartment so two people can use the facility at the same time. The vanity is in its own separate compartment with a huge linen locker behind it. The shower is huge with full height solid door keeping everything dry, and uniquely on both the 40 and 44, there is a laundry room with space for an externally vented, washer/dryer. (this is really important—we custom do this installation. The typical MF installed unit doesn’t have a big enough compartment for the externally vented model and so uses the internally vented model which just doesn’t dry like a normal dryer—often taking 3-4 hours to dry, compared to our typical 40 min or so.)
Why is a washer-dryer important? We are finding more and more that marinas, but now even mooring fields and anchorages, are not allowing laundry on the lifelines. Nothing like dirty, wet laundry stashed inside the boat waiting until you next venture out, or hike to the local laundromat. more
