Design considerations also dictated size. The company had decided on a steel hull rather than the aluminum one featured on the QE2, because of steel's better durability. But that meant the ship had to be made wider. Ultimately the size was constrained in length by the amount of room in which the ship could turn around in its two main harbors: Southampton, England, and New York. Its height was tailored for passage under New York City's Verrazano Narrows Bridge. The QM2's growth didn't stop, however, until she was already too large to make it through the Panama Canal. Conover says that was not a major concern as "Panama Canal economies just weren't there for ocean liners." However, the company's president does confess to "a bit of gulping" as the price rose on the vessel during the more than five years between the idea's conception and launch. more

It's the biggest hype in memory surrounding a passenger vessel.

Situated off of the Commodore Club, with its magnificent views at the ship's bow on the ninth deck, is perhaps the best diversion of all: Churchill's, the ship's clubby cigar corner. Inside the well-appointed room that fits about 10 or 12 sits a lone smoker, puffing on, appropriately enough, a Churchill. "Welcome," he says, snapping out of his reverie. "You've found the best place to be on board." [links]

The ship has 10 dining venues, including a pub and a snack bar. The largest is Brittania, modeled after the line's dining salons of old. Top-class passengers may eat at the Queens Grill, which allows à la carte dining. Junior suite passengers can eat at the Princess Grill. King's Court on the Lido deck has an English carvery and an Italian and Asian restaurant. The Golden Lion and Boardwalk Grill serve "fast grub."

Cigarette smoking in public venues is only permitted in designated areas within Carnival's night clubs and casinos (and sometimes casino bars); note smoking in clubs is not permitted on Carnival Elation, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Victory and Carnival Vista.

The answer is yes. All cruise ships allow smoking in certain areas, which are typically designated in outdoor smoking zones and sometimes in casinos, nightclubs, cigar lounges and cabin balconies (depending on the cruise line). The rest of the ship is firmly nonsmoking, however, and that includes all staterooms, restaurants and theaters.

Whether you're a smoker or hate to be around cigarettes and cigars, you might be wondering: Can you smoke on a cruise?

If you're looking to light up on your trip, the cruise lines with the least restrictive smoking policies allow passengers to smoke on their cabin balconies. These include Costa Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. (Fred. Olsen also permits passengers to use vaporless e-cigarettes in their staterooms.) Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises don't permit smoking on cabin balconies but do generally allow it in sections of their ships’ nightclubs and casinos. more

We want you to be comfortable on board, so public areas throughout all NCL ships are smoke free. If you smoke cigarettes, you can do so in your stateroom, on your balcony, in the casino or Cigar Bar (where available). If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Also, you can smoke cigarettes, pipes and cigars outside on open decks (just not around food venues, sport decks, kids' pool areas and other designated non-smoking areas). [links]

on Royal Carribean, there's a smoking side and a non-smoking side. So if you want to smoke, you can simply go to the starboard side of the ship and sit on the deck chairs out there, or go to the port side for smoke free relaxation. [links]

You are right about what they say on NCL. but remember, you are crusing on NCL which doesn't have the best rating so you might want to consider this when picking any cruiseline.

FYI. you have to understand that the cabin stewards will report to their station Rep's any indication of any smoking materials if you are in a NO SMOKING room even if you don't light up. Carnival kicks off at least 1 to 2 cabins a week on their cruises for people who have smoking materials in their room. They just don't broadcast it to any as much as they come in with a sealed tape over the door and kick you off. Forewarned is forearmed! more

Some of our favorite drinks here at the Music Hall included Trane and Metalliquor. We also sampled Whiskey in Jar, Titus Andronicus, and Tribute. DB enjoyed the Whiskey in a Jar as well.
