A Speed Coil is how an electric motor like this works. The general premise of how this kind of electric motor works is that you have a positive and a negative voltage, and those are applied to a set of brushes that touch a commutator on an armature. When they touch that commentator on the armature, they’re electrifying that commutator, and then the armature then spins inside of a magnetic housing. more
Given that a Speed Coil has 5 speeds, you should only use the 5th speed to move or get around something quickly or to make a quick maneuver. For the most part, the recommendation is to run your motor on speed 3 for the majority of your use, and 4 should be the max for cruising, but 3 is best. Remember, they’re not built for speed, they’re designed for trolling between 1 to 3 miles an hour. [links]

There is a common misconception among boaters that pounds of thrust is directly related to horsepower, unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Horsepower and pounds of thrust are entirely different ways to measure force; thrust is the amount of force APPLIED to an object, example, when I sit on a table, I exert 170lbs of downward force on that table. On the other hand, power or horsepower is a measurement of work, how do you measure work? Work has three components: force, distance, and time. Example, you can be paid hourly for your time, you can be paid for the amount of effort (force) you expend, per vehicle you repair. Or, you could be paid for how far you transport something, this is the distance component of work.

By their design and nature, 55 lb. thrust trolling motors usually are not suitable for large boats, swift currents or strong ocean tides. They are best for people who want to enjoy recreational activities while fishing on a small lake or slow river.
The service center closed in 1994. I have no information on motors or parts after the 1994 model years!
