My Question is: Which one of the 2 will be compatible with my 4HP Mercury? The 3AUA model or the 3R4A model.
I have a 2006 4hp Mercury 4 stroke of which I need to replace the carb. In doing some research on the forums I found out that Tohatsu parts of this era are compatible with Mercs (the Merc is a Tohatsu powerhead as I understand). I figured this was a good time to upgrade to a 6hp carb, and thought since the Tohatsu was less expensive I would go with that. There are 2 different Carbs listed on the 6HP parts diagram.
The Icing on the cake is:
Tohatsu 6HP carb = $110
Merc 4hp Carb= $214
I havent noticed any fuel on the spark plug. How do I flood the carb? here
Thank you all for your help, I tried most of your suggestions with no luck. I ended up dropping the outboard down to Bill at Home Marine on Saturday morning. He seemed to think that one of his services would get it running and he offers a 3 month warranty with every full service. As I have no idea about these small engines and have tried most options within my capability / comfort zone, I thought I would just get a professional to look at it. [links]
OK, so a friend of mine suggested removing the spark plug and putting half a teaspoon on fuel in the cylinder, which I've done and the engine does momentarily fire up but cuts out almost immediately. Before doing this I replaced the fuel and drained the reservoir in the carb.
I'm assuming this confirms that the engine itself is okay but there is still an issue with fuel getting through. The carb looks clean, I've removed the jet and cleaned it out. Is there anything else in the carb that I can check or between the carb and the cylinder? Or is there a way I can check fuel is getting through the carb?

Having same problem with my 25hp. I've seen it before. The CDI's get wet and need to be replaced. I think that's the name for them, something like capacitive discharge ignition, not sure. If you leave the motor out and these suckers get damp they short and then are shot. You get some spark, enough for idle but when you throttle up she floods out. Pull my plugs and they are wet. A dealer can test them to be sure. It's not cheap to replace. That's were I'm headed next.
