So now my one hour impeller job has turned into a mind bender.
No problem finding the 5 bolts to lower the lower unit about an inch but I do not see any shift rod Jam nut release like I saw on the I-tune video I watched. The video was of a Mercury 50 HP unit a little older than this one. It had a two nut release on the rod. This was on the D-Ray's shop video.
Another video showed bigger Mercury units. 75,90,105, and 115 hp. Those lower ends just slid right down with the drive rod. [links]
I am in the process of changing out the impeller on a 2003 Mercury 40hp EFI 4 stroke.
I can not see how the gear shift rod gets released on this unit. [links]
Anyone out there have any idea on how the shift rod gets released from this motor.

This is the standard Quicksilver kit that is used for the type of engine I have so everything fit as it should. The only complaint is that there is no upper o-ring for the rubber water connector tube that connects the top of the water pump housing to the rest of the engine. Since this tube is removed to replace the lower o-ring provided in the kit, the upper o-ring should be provided and replaced as well.
Good OEM product, has everything you need. [links]
This kit fit my 2002 225 EFI Mercury outboard. No instructions come with this kit so be careful and take pictures with your phone when you disassemble your motor.
This part is for a 199. 40 HP Force outboard, built by Mercury Marine, and purchased by me in 2014. If this part fails in use, the boat is out of commission and the operator left powerless on the water. Wishing to avoid such calamity I acted preemptively and made my best attempt to order the correct part, but when I attempted to install the impellor it was considerably too large. Luckily for me I found that the 'old one' appears to be in perfect, like new condition and so after I measured and recorded its measurements, I put everything back together. The 'proof of the pudding' regarding this EBay purchase will be the return, or preferably an exchange for a correct part that I can hold as a spare. We'll see. here
