I hope you guys are right,re stuck dowel pins.I have just removed the lower unit from my Mariner 60 hp two stroke, admittedly it hasn't been touched for more than 10 yrs-what appeared to be stuck dowel pins, was a frozen drive shaft. It took 2 days in total to get it apart without damaging the ally cases, including suspending a 100 LB weight from the lower unit and hitting this weight with a lump hammer and drift-liberal use of WD40 or similar is good-I would start with spraying and a few smacks with a rubber hammer-I wish you luck. more

Thanks Everyone. Yesterday I was using a stiff putty knife and spraying the dowel pin area with WD40 hoping that it would migrate through the crack and up while I wiggled the drive back and forth. I will keep at it everyday for a while and see if it comes loose. I'm pretty sure it is the dowel pin now especially after hearing comments above. I have been thinking that some hardwood wedges might also be of use. I will let you all know if it drops. Patience, patience. [links]

(Please don't respond with "there's another bolt under the anode trim tab" as this model doesn't have it.)

a mechanic told me he uses kerosene to loosen stubborn parts. might be worth a try .

You should have a Mercury style lower unit similar to the one in this video. There is one bolt that is "hidden". I think this might help.

Check and see if you have one more. It should be over the prop and is counter sunk so its hidden. My 120 has 5 bolts to remove. You might even have to use a rubber mallet to help remove it.

Have you removed the lower unit to check this or are you trying it with the shift control at the helm?

Change the seal in the bushing and the o-ring below the bushing, reinstall the bushing.

No, it is not supposed to do that. The shaft is spinning because the splined end of the shaft is not engaging the shift cam. here

Pull the shift rod retainer from the top of the lower unit and pull the shift rod out of the lower unit.

Remove the four bolts holding the water pump together from the water pump housing with a socket wrench. Slide the impeller from the lower unit and slide them up and off the driveshaft. Pull the impeller plate off the lower unit and slip it off the driveshaft. here

Remove the bearing carrier retaining bolts. Insert two small pry bars under the lip of the bearing carrier, and gently pry the housing and propeller shaft out of the lower unit as an assembly.

Your outboard motor has three distinct parts: a power head, which is the gasoline engine that powers the outboard motor; the exhaust housing that protrudes downward from the power head, wrapping around the exhaust system and the driveshaft; and the lower unit. You have to slide the lower unit from the motor to remove the driveshaft since the lower unit -- where the propeller, gear case and driveshaft are found -- is where the driveshaft is secured.

Take out the bolts that connect the lower unit to the exhaust housing with a socket wrench. Slide the lower unit straight down and off the outboard. Set the lower unit upright in a bench vise.

Locate the pry tabs where the housing meets the lower unit and use a small pry bar to loosen the fit between the housing and the lower unit. Pull the driveshaft upward, removing the bearing housing, driveshaft and retaining ring. here
