The general rule of thumb when setting a post is that the depth of the post’s hole needs to be 1/3 to 1/2 of the actual above-ground height of the post. So, six-foot-high fence posts ideally need to be buried three feet into the ground. The diameter of your post hole should be three times the diameter of your post. So, if you’re planning on using a four-inch round or 4x4-inch square post, your post hole will need to be 12 inches in diameter. For a six-foot-high fence post, we would need a hole that’s 36 inches deep and 12 inches in diameter. here

Knowing how deep your fence post needs to be set is key to answering the question. Learn how to set a post and figure out how much concrete you’ll need.

Mix two 50lb bags of concrete with water in a mixing tub or 5-gallon bucket. Add concrete into the hole and around the 4” x 4”. Depending on your climate, let concrete set up for 24 - 48 hours.

Now that you’ve determined the size of the hole you’ll need, you can use the chart below to determine how many 50-pound bags of concrete you’ll need. Our example post will require two bags for every post if you’re using fast-setting concrete. [links]

Fast-setting concrete is ideal for installing fence posts since it doesn't need to be mixed in a bucket or a wheelbarrow. Once you’ve finished digging your post holes, add about three to four inches of gravel into the bottom and compact it using a post or a 2x4. Then, set your post in place and use a level to ensure that it’s perfectly vertical. Stake your post in place with two braces and pour your dry concrete into the hole, surrounding the post up to about three inches below the lip. Slowly fill the hole in with about a gallon of water, enough so that you’ve saturated all of the concrete.

First, you need to calculate the volume for the post hole. Then calculate the volume for the part of the post that will be submerged in the hole. Make sure all your units are the same!

Let’s use an example to illustrate what we covered above. Let’s say we are installing a 6’ fence. Therefore, 2’ of the post will be in the ground. You need twenty (20) 4” nominal round posts. Note that 4” posts are actually 3 ½” in diameter. Use the formulas above for volume. more

Plastic piers require the digging, but unlike footings, there is no concrete involved. The pier is put into the hole and attached the post, giving you your deck without wasting hours installing footings.Aug 7, 2019

This footing method involves pouring a concrete pad at least 12” thick at the base of your hole. The pressure treatment companies insist that these posts will last longer in the ground than the deck frame that is built above it, and this practice is accepted by the IRC code. …

A concrete that sets up this fast is great for some projects like setting a fence post or making a small repair. But it’s not great for large patios or anything that needs finishing. With such a short amount of dry time, it’s really hard to do all your finish work.I’ve seen plenty of concrete projects ruined because they weren’t finishing properly before they set up. [links]

Setting is when concrete has dried, and hardened, to the point where it’s solid and can’t be worked anymore. Once concrete has set up, you won’t be able to trowel, shape or broom the finish anymore. And typically it’s safe to walk on. How long a concrete mixture takes to set depends on how much water was used in the mixture, what ingredients and ratios were used in the mix, and the weather. more
