One of the most common (and inconvenient) problems with the Mitsubishi Mirage is when it has no heat coming from the heater. Not having a functioning heater makes driving much less comfortable, and can be a sign of certain issues. At the simplest level, there are two main reasons why the heater is not working. If it’s not coming on at all, it’s usually either the blower motor or some other wiring issue. If the heat is blowing, but blowing cold, it has something to do with the coolant getting to the heater core, or the heater core itself.

If you look at your temperature gauge, and the engine is running hotter than normal, but there is not heat coming from the heater you may be having issues with the water pump. Try taking the vehicle out of gear and revving the engine a little. If you feel the heat start to blow hot for a few seconds that’s an indication of a bad water pump or low coolant. Also, the serpentine belt going to the water pump going bad can it not turn as fast as it needs to.

A word of caution: If there is no coolant in your overflow, you can refill it by adding more to the overflow reservoir. There is almost never a situation where you would need to take the radiator cap off of the radiator to add coolant. The exception to that would be when you would have reason to believe that the hose going from the reservoir to the radiator is clogged. Anytime you’re putting your hand around the radiator or fans in the engine assume that they are hot and that the fans can kick on at any time, even without your key in the ignition.

We all know that an empty petrol tank means a stationary car, but did you also know that starting a cold car first thing in the morning uses 40% more fuel than usual? In other words, if you’re heading home from work tomorrow evening and you notice your fuel tank is looking a little low, it’s a good idea to fill up before you park it up for the night, or you might find yourself caught short the next morning.

All your standard electrical accessories such as headlights, heaters and radios use up battery power, so turning all of these off before trying to start the car will give the battery a much better chance of getting the engine going. If your engine does start, let it run a while before you switch any of these accessories back on or you run the risk of killing the battery again.

This really should be your last resort, when you’ve exhausted all other options. Even if you have jump leads in your car, it’s not a good idea to attempt it if you don’t know what you’re doing as you can hurt yourself or damage your car. here

Another sneaky trick that can sometimes work is dipping the clutch slightly as you turn the ignition. This actually reduces the amount of work the battery has to do, and gives the engine a fighting chance of starting up, even in a cold car. more

With both cars in neutral and engines off, attach one end of the red jump cable to the positive battery terminal on your car, and the other end on the positive terminal on the battery of the other car. Then attach one end of the black jump cable to the negative terminal on the battery of the other car, and the other end to an unpainted metal surface on your own vehicle. Then start the engine of the other car and leave it running a few minutes before you start your own engine. [links]

If, however, you’re an old hand at jump-starting this is worth a try if can find a good Samaritan with a running car to help you out. [links]

The other day I was out and the car wouldn't start, then I got a jump from a friend and the car started up normally, this was on friday. It also started up normally yesterday but today it worked fine all day and a few minutes ago I tried starting it again and it doesn't start.

- Plug wires misrouted. Check firing order. Cylinders are numbered
starting from the other side that the distributor is on. In other words,
cylinder closest to the distributor is number 4. [links]

5. Cranks, has spark and fuel, but won't start.
- You shouldn't get here much. With air, fuel and spark, it should at least
shudder and backfire, and kind of run. My car will even run somewhat
on two cylinders. [links]
