The Charles River 158 is a great looking canoe and has been styled with a flared bow and stern for a traditional look. It is a great canoe for paddling in flat water and tracks in a straight line very well due to its strong keel. It is a stable canoe and is very popular choice with families as well as activity centres.

For over 25 years the Discovery 158 has been one of our best selling canoes. If you're looking for a tough and rugged canoe, the Discovery 158 is it! Our Three Layer construction is designed to take a beating. But, the Discovery 158 is also designed to perform well on the water. Agile, stable and easy to handle, the Discovery 158 is a nice choice for the outdoor enthusiast.
The boat is made of polylink 3. This material is a polyethelene hull with a foam core. the foam core adds stiffness to the canoe. The seats are molded plastic, but some boats have wood seats. The yoke is ash and the rails are rubber. more
My disco is over 20 years old and has survived a very hard life. It has spent its life stored outdoors in the sun and has run many thousands of miles of rivers from class II whitewater to flatwater rivers and lakes. more
It is taking some getting used to, as it paddles very differently from the old canoe, and is much faster, quicker to turn, and after a stroke of the paddle, glides nicely. (the old laker was like running in glue compared to this boat). I am so pleased with it that I am welding up a new canoe trailer just to haul it around with! All in all, I am a 'happy camper'. more
When I returned to my farm last summer, the canoe was secured so tight it looked like a large red bowtie. It still handled well in the modest (shallow) flow of the river even with a pronounced crease in the bottoms center. I returned to So. California for it to rest on two wood horses in the hot sun and after a time outside (120°+) it returned to its shape with only a very slight hard to see dimple on the bottom. Fantastic, as it will probably return to shape completely this summer with use and SC sun strobe.
After narrowing it down between the OT Charles River vs. the Mad River Explorer 16 tt (both plastic for around $750) I decided on the OT. here
A modern canoe with design lines of an old classic. The Charles River 15 is constructed with our durable three layer construction and features a shallow arch bottom which provides good overall stability. The tumblehome well above the waterline allows for a smaller paddler to reach comfortably while paddling without having to compromise stability by leaning over. If you like the way it looks, you'll love the way it paddles.
