knowing how Bill(commercial crabber that was in his late 60's) did maint I used Volvo GL5 synthetic in his case thinking I was doing good. here
simply use the rated standard 90wmarine gear oil and go play.

Well I got the impeller swapped out. It's fairly simple; worst part was lining everything back up. I took extra care to make sure all the gaskets were in place and ever nut and bolt was in place and sealed up. So hopefully that will take care of the oilly water mix, but for now it's runnin cool at 160* and it's time for a test run
PS: noticed that since it's running cooler the oil pressure is up and the idle is smoother. *bonus* here

You're hoping up the wrong tree. A raw water pump has NOTHING to do with a drive that is leaking. here

If you actually do have a leak and you continue to run it that way, you'll eventually be replacing the drive when it seizes. more
What's your top speed with each prop and what would you say the other differences are between the 2 you own? here
As you know, it says to use either Yamaha HD oil or hypoid gear oil.
I have the same VF115LA. What prop are you using, just curious. Right now I have a plain aluminum. here
This is my first boat so I'm unsure what the trade-offs are between different types of props.
With my current prop the fastest SOG I've registered is 40mph. here
Between Yamaha regular and Yamaha HD, the choice would be the HD stuff. more
