Although Rogers’ returned to England a hero, his own fortunes ebbed and flowed until he was able to use his personal connections with King George I to forge an agreement to manage the pirate-infested Bahamas in exchange for a share of the British colony’s profits. Not only did Rogers now have British monetary and military resources at his disposal, but he also had ability to give the King’s pardon to pirates.
Before his appointment as Royal Governor of The Bahamas in 1717, Woodes Rogers was an English sea captain and privateer. In 1707, his support was sought to lead a privateering voyage against the Spanish, with whom the British were at war. Captain Rogers led an expedition, and in the ensuing years, circumnavigated the world, captured a number of ships and even rescued the marooned Alexander Selkirk in the South Pacific, whose plight is believed to be the inspiration behind the novel, Robinson Crusoe. Pirates in The Bahamas would be fully pardoned if they would agree to cease pirate activity immediately. In the end, those who chose amnesty would later join Rogers in confronting pirates who were not quick to surrender. (Those who didn’t were sentenced and hanged.) Eventually, Rogers was able to establish a well-organized government and expel all pirates from Nassau.
The British Colonial Hilton was built on the site of Old Fort Nassau (1695)—and now Woodes Rogers’ life-like figure with sword drawn and cloak swirling around him stands at the front of the hotel as a vivid reminder of Nassau’s historic past. And although it no longer caters to swashbuckling pirates, the British Colonial Hilton still offers a taste of the Island’s rich Bahamian history, only with a contemporary flair. The hotel features more than 291 rooms and suites that still showcase a deep colonial past. The French and English colonists started setting up plantations and populated the island in a short time. They were temporary expelled as a potential treat to Spaniards when Don Fabrique de Toledo attacked Tortuga in 1629. The encouraged army came back to Hispaniola, determined to root out every colonist, until not a single one remained. However, Spanish did not predict that scattered colonists would organize and return to the island and defeat small remains of Spanish force.
Until 1665 Tortuga was temporarily captured by the Spanish one more time, and than the island became a part of Saint Dominique colony. The new governor, Bertrand D'ogeron had difficulties to convince the buccaneers to accept him. However, he managed to develop Tortuga even more by organizing people and strengthening its defense. more
In 1625 French and English colonist, who were early buccaneers, arrived on the island. First they lived on island of Hispaniola. They were constantly wandering from one location to another, until they finally found the Tortuga to be the safest place.
Although piracy was officially abolished on Tortuga by the Treaty of Utrecht, thanks to the local governor Tortuga remained a safe heaven for pirates, smugglers, and all sorts of outlaws. A dank and dirty port, Tortuga became a place where the tides seem to have swept together the sum of pirates, privateers, prostitutes, thieves, and drunkards. With its cantered, rotting docks, weatherbeaten buildings, and odd assortment of livestock running free (donkeys, chickens, etc.), Tortuga was far less civilized than Port Royal. here
Yet it’s a lesser-known French pirate, Jean Hamlin, whose presence on St. Thomas is best documented. Hamlin was a successful pirate, having raided English and other European ships off the coast of Jamaica and Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. Hamlin also raided ships off the coast of Sierra Leone, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean in northwestern Africa.
Even though a treasure-hunter claimed to find the wreck of La Trompeuse in 1990, Consolvo believes the remains of the sunken vessel have not been located. If it were found, he thinks the ship would be of historical significance—though he doubts it would hold many riches. [links]
