Ahoy, mateys. Are you fans of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise? Well, consider this: The ship that Captain Jack Sparrow used to pursue the Black Pearl in the franchise’s first movie will soon be in Southern California — and you can ship out on it, even if only for a few hours.

It has another Disneyland connection as well: Guess the name of the original Lady Washington’s companion ship when it became the first ship under an American flag to visit the West Coast of the United States. …. It was the Columbia Rediviva, better known today as the Sailing Ship Columbia, which was the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe. And guess where the full-scale replica of that ship cruises today? That’s right. At Disneyland.

The 138-foot long Brig Unicorn was built in the late 1940’s in Finland. The ship was featured in at least three of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (although not as the Black Pearl), as well as in the 1970’s TV series Roots.

In 2007, the ship was repainted black and toured the United Kingdom as the Black Pearl, the ship of Captain Jack Sparrow, despite the fact that the Black Pearl was portrayed by another, completely different vessel. The fraud was exposed by the 12 year old POTC fan Ross Winstanley. [2]

The Bounty was crewed by a combination of volunteers and paid crew men. While no experience was necessary to join the volunteer crew, they required some time spent working on restoration or dockside maintenance.

When not used for filming, the Bounty was open to the public. Tours were conducted at Tall Ship shows and people could sail with the ship for a fee. The Bounty also recreated the voyage of the original ship. more

The Brig Unicorn was built in 1948. During its film career, the Brig Unicorn served as The Henrietta in ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’ and as The Terrashaw in ‘Dead Man's Chest’. The ship also rose to stardom appearing as a slave ship in the 1970s TV series, Roots. [links]

It remains unclear exactly what caused the ship to sink.
