Natural gas runs from the main into a home or business in what's called a one-inch or smaller-diameter natural gas service line. In the service line gas pressure varies by community and other factors, flowing at a pressure range of over 60 pounds to as low as ¼ pound. more
And in natural gas fuel systems the gas pressure delivered from the gas main in the street can also vary widely by area, season, time of day and for other reasons.
Typically a manufacturer of a home appliance such as gas cooktop will indicate that the LP gas pressure supplied to the appliance regulator inlet cannot exceed 14" WC for LP gas. Manufacturers also say that the inlet gas presure must be at least 1" WC greater than the regulator output pressure setting.

At this temperature or below, propane remains in a liquid state, which condenses a large amount of energy into a small volume of fluid. When the propane’s temperature increases, it begins to “boil” off and this vapor is the usable form of propane that is converted to flame and heat your appliances. In this state, propane gas has a natural reaction to expand until it reaches equilibrium, or where it has normalized with atmospheric pressure.
On smaller systems, such as propane barbecue grills, it’s important to remember that exposure to direct sunlight can increase both the temperature and pressure inside your propane tank. here

We are running Liquid propane (not Vapor propane ) from a 1000 gallon tank to a burner with a vaporizer, after the vaporizer we have the regulator and an orifice before the burner bar. The question is should we be regulating the liquid at the tank? if you are running 10 lbs. pressure through an orifice how can you calculate the BTU used?
I just bought a propane fueled generator. Instructions say use only a 20 or 30 lb lpg tank with the generator. I have two 40 lb tanks full so I called manufacturer to determine if it's ok to use the 40 lb tanks. Employee said instructions say use only 20 or 30 lb tanks with no further explanation. The generator comes with a regulator.
Thanks for the interesting question, Lee. It's beyond my expertise. We're generally addressing vapour form of LP in these articles with caveats about where liquid might enter where it should not.
The orifice size opening is equally important as is delivery pressure. Imagine a typical 5/8" diameter garden hose to which 40 psi of water is being delivered. Now reduce the hose opening diameter to 1/8" and recall from your own experience what happens to the water stream. The total flow rate in gallons per minute will be significantly reduced. [links]

If you look on the outside label of an old Blue Rhino tank, it will say 17 Lb., while the new tanks say 15 Lb. What they have done is drop from 4 gallons, down to 3.5 gallons. The public does not know the difference, but you can check out an interesting news report about it. Also, the term “full” is misleading. I would say that my tank is full, if I had 4 gallons, or my OPD kicked in a little before or after 4 gallons, because the tank is not supposed to take more than that for the purpose of safety. If you tell people it is not full, they think someone is cheating them, unless you break it down and explain it like I have done here, and they understand that if a tank could actually be filled all the way, and if it did not have an OPD, it would be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. There are still old tanks running around, even though they are illegal and out of date. If someone got a tank filled all the way, and the temperature rose just a little, propane would be released by the valve, because it is supposed to release propane at a certain pressure, to avoid the tank from rupturing, in the even that it was rusted at a seem, etc.
Which would be 80%…..the fill it is supposed to be at so it doesn’t blow yer ass up when it expands with temperature. more
Tip! Depending on the weather conditions you may actually see condensation on the sides of a propane tank. There will be a clear demarcation indicating the level of propane inside the tank!
