yea there is a big deal about it. the problem is that you will have too much motor in the water and this will have a negative effect on performance. For best results the cavitation plate should be relatively even with the bottom of the boat. but if you instist on buying the motor then I recommend trying to build a higher transom on your boat I think that this would be alot cheaper than converting the motor to short shaft

Hi, LBB.<br /><br />Measure your transom, from top to bottom. <br /><br />If it is about 15", use a short shaft engine or add a jackplate to raise a long shaft engine 5".<br /><br />If your transom is about 20" a long shaft is what you need.<br /><br />Good luck. more

I use my briggs on my found john boat and I get about 12 to 14 miles per hour depending on the weather and lake conditions, the briggs is a nicew engine. more
Depends on how fast you want to go. If you are fishing large lakes and want to move from one creek or point to another and hit many spots in a few hours you may want more power. I have a 6hp on a 14ft jon that is probably the same weight as yours and it goes 9mph. I routinely fish a lake that is 28,000 acres and needed to go faster. So I got a 15hp. Now I can do 30+mph! I still like the 6hp for small rivers and saltwater flats. In very shallow areas a large motor (over60lbs) is going to lower your boat depth or draft. My 15hp is 75lbs and lowers the boat an additional inch or so. So it depends on the water you run it in. here
I have a '53 5 horse johnson on my 14 foot jon. It planes as long as I have a construction block up in front. I weigh 250 and that puts a lot of weight in the back. [links]

Here is a really nice 12' aluminum flat bottom boat with trailer. This boat comes with a 7.5 hp outboard motor, new rims and tires, new winch and cable, gas tank, and anchor. The engine runs really good, does have a crack in engine cover but runs great and looks like new and only have been ran in water a few times. Trailer has new wiring, lights, tires, rims, and winch. 14.5 foot semi-V sears game fisher. Boat was sanded and painted in 2012 and the bottom was covered with spray on bedliner. The boat comes with a 9.9 HP mariner tiller steer outboard. new fuel tank and lines. The motor has been fogged the last 3 winter and was brought inside after duck season this year. All gear and blind is included. Blind is removable with 4 wing nuts and does not go through the hull. Boat can take 3 hunters, dog and all the gear with no problems at all.
