The U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix have relatively large airports and receive flights from Puerto Rico. Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines have flights departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to both island cities. The flight to St. Thomas takes about 30 minutes, while St. Croix is approximately 20 minutes away. For a more adventurous trip, try a seaplane. The carrier Cape Air provides inter-island service between San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Croix and the British Virgin Islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Cape Air also has a flight from the Puerto Rican island of Vieques to St. Croix. Prices vary seasonally but usually peak in January and February when the Caribbean is flooded with U.S. sun-seekers.

The Virgin Islands in the Caribbean entice visitors with everything from pristine beaches and lush jungles to trendy boutiques and yacht clubs. Separate islands in the chain are territories of either the U.S. or the United Kingdom. The main islands are accessible by air from many U.S. cities, but you can also reach your destination from Puerto Rico, just west of the islands. In fact, traveling to the Virgin Islands from Puerto Rico can be the easiest and most scenic way of reaching any of the islands in the chain. more

Traveling by sea across the clear, still waters of the Caribbean may be the most scenic way of reaching the Virgin Islands from Puerto Rico. Sea travel often is the only way of reaching smaller and less populated islands like St. John. Major cruise lines like Holland America, Carnival and Celebrity Cruise Line Disney travel between Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. For a more private trip, consider a yacht charter. Numerous yacht owners and charter companies in the area rent their vessels – with or without a crew – for travel to and from Puerto Rico or between the Virgin Islands.

The ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola takes 1 hour. Because Tortola will be your first stop outside the U.S., you will need to get off the boat to clear Customs and Immigration before proceeding to Virgin Gorda. This typically takes 15-20 minutes. You will then depart from the same dock for the 30-minute ferry ride from Road Town, Tortola to Virgin Gorda. [links]
