Lastly, check your directional pointer. Those of us who fish regularly rarely pay attention to this small item, except when we get in a tight place and have to back out. Been there! Oh yes, be sure to get in your boat, lower your troller, and check to see if it turns with the pedal. After all, that’s why you spent mega bucks on a foot control, right? [links]

Check your fuses. Better yet, install circuit breakers that are much easier to reset when the fish are biting. If you already have circuit breakers, check them for corrosion and clean them. Cleaners are available at any auto parts store. These also are recommended for cleaning most battery terminals.

Mounts? If your high thrust motor is not on a breakaway mount, get a new mount that does. Even the spring loaded mounts can fail with enough force. Repair shops remind us that, under the right conditions, any trolling motor shaft will fail. Prior to the new stainless steel braced mounts, warping of the braces was a common occurrence. Be sure to check the bolts that secure the mount to the boat. Cold and vibration can affect their grip and loosen them. [links]

While you are at it, check the shear pin. If it’s bent, replace it. They are very inexpensive and should you have to remove the old prop, for any reason, the prop change will be much easier. Changing props on the water is not very easy anyway. Always have a spare prop, pin, and nut for there is not a prop made that will not break or bend. more

At first glance, getting into a kayak while swimming in deep water may seem like a difficult skill to master, but with a little practice, it soon becomes easy. In fact, there are several different ways that kayakers complete this task, using different equipment. Here’s a bit of what I learned during a day-long paddling skills and safety course led by Karen Franceour, a registered Maine sea kayak guide and owner of Castine Kayak Adventures.

Just like in self rescue, there are several different methods for conducting a rescue with a partner. It usually involves the rescuer securing the paddles to the side of their boat (a carabiner attached to a paracord is great for this), righting and emptying the flipped boat, then using their body weight to stabilize the righted boat as their companion climbs in.

If they’ve practiced rescue techniques, a paddling companion can help you get back into your kayak without a paddle float. This is just one of the many reasons that paddling with someone can be safer than paddling alone.

The hull and decks are constructed from virtually indestructible co-polymer plastic, using a heat-and-vacuum forming process called thermoforming. The hull and deck are rigid and stiff thanks to an inner specially designed inter deck and the medium itself. Unlike rotocast polyethylene this boat will not change shape when exposed to hot sunlight. This is necessary for a performance rowing boat. The Solo 14 ® ’s exterior has an acrylic coating bonded to it known as ‘Solarcote™’. It is UV-proof and retains a glossy yacht-like finish. Co-polymer is much more impact-resistant than a fiberglass hull, does not go chalky or dull like gelcoat, It simplyd stays shiny and looking good for years. Our commitment to quality and superior design has produced the absolute best boat of its type in the marketplace. The materials and copolymer plastic used in construction of the Solo 14 ® are 100% recyclable.
