Considering the airstrip operates without an air traffic control centre though, that is probably for the best. more

This tiny runway on the island of Saba is just 1,312 feet long, which rules it out for all but the smallest planes. In the video, Swiss001 says most people travel to and from the island by helicopter, but most really take short plane flights or ferries. Saba is an "special municipality" of the Netherlands—not to be confused with an even smaller, even less flyable island off the southern coast of St. Thomas. Almost 2,000 people live there. more

Most airplanes need longer distances to take off than they do to land, and certainly a lot of planes could be stranded on Saba if they only used plausible landing distance instead without any way to take back off. But even landing distance would rule out the vast majority of planes. The entire length is only a couple hundred feet longer than an aircraft carrier runway, where mechanical assists enable both takeoff and landing of some of the most agile aircraft in the world.

The littlest runway is packed onto the only plausible place on the island, positioned in the only orientation that makes sense without hitting rocky hills on either side. There are strong vibes here of playing Roller Coaster Tycoon and moving your roller coaster one pixel at a time until it fits in a weird space. On either end of the quarter mile, there’s a sharp, rocky dropoff directly into the Caribbean Sea. [links]
