My suggestion is to try and buy a new car for $500-$1000 less than true market value. This is aggressive, but assuming that you've got time and you're willing to work the phone, you can often find a dealership willing to dip into their holdback (financial reserve) to make one more deal. more
4. Follow-up on days that have had terrible weather. A major snowstorm, a day of wind and rain, etc. can dramatically affect car sales. Call and remind the salesperson or manager that you're happy to come down when they meet your offer. Again, the fact that they're not selling cars might get them to bend in your favor.
3. Follow-up on the last day of the month. Again, salespeople and managers are often under pressure to find one more deal before the month ends. A deal that didn't make sense on the 25th might make sense on the 31st if the month hasn't met expectations.
If you're buying a used car, I'd try for a 10-15% discount off of wholesale (trade-in) value. It's damn difficult, but every now and then a dealer will take a car in on trade at below market value. If you make this kind of aggressive offer, you might get it every now and again. more

When draughtsman Nick Skeates lost his previous wooden boat on a reef part way through a circumnavigation he was determined that his next yacht would be more robust. When you decide what kind of boat you would like, don't just narrow it down to one manufacturer and model. Boats are rather generic, and narrow your search down to 3-4 brands and comparable models. Many boat franchise dealers just have one or two dealers in a state, or even in a region. If you'll widen your horizon, there's something out there to suit your needs.
Both an auto dealer and a boat dealer must run a profitable business, or they'll be out of business next year. The owners deserve a salary for their time, and a separate profit that's a return on their investment. Working capital to run one of these businesses would scare you--just to pay their day to day expenses. [links]
I'm not 100% sure as I've never purchased a new boat - but bear in mind that the quantities are much smaller. Toyota sells around 400,000 Camry's in the US alone each year. Most boat manufactureres would be lucky to do 1% of that business. The dealers get a portion of that profit, and as such the boat dealers have to charge a larger margin than cars. We have been attending boatshows for more than 14 years, representing a variety of boat builders, from South Africa, South America, Thailand, China and the USA and we always get this one question: “What is the perfect catamaran?”. Every manufacturer would have you believe that they have THE perfect catamaran and even though some come close, there simply is no such thing. Just like with a house, you will have to compromise or customize and even then, one always has to give up one thing to gain another. While choosing the right catamaran is a very personal choice, you can avoid some serious blunders by following these ten tips as a guideline.
Most modern catamarans are beautifully appointed with freezers, fridges, water makers, corian counter tops and heavy wood finishes primarily targeting the charter market. While that is gorgeous, all that weight will no doubt influence the performance of the catamaran because the more weight that’s added to a catamaran, the more the sailing characteristics of the catamaran is altered. With the catamaran sitting lower in the water with less bridgedeck clearance, weighed down with all the extra gear, the slamming and wallowing could be very uncomfortable in heavy seas and slow it down significantly. Performance catamarans like Catana or Outremer are built for speed with narrower hulls, lighter and high tech materials and of course cost a lot more than a regular catamaran like Lagoon or Fountaine Pajot which is purpose built for the cruising sailor. Speed is not as much of a factor. If crossing oceans safely and comfortably is what you want to do, be mindful of weight and design. If you are looking for a comfy spacious catamaran at anchor, go for wider hulls and open space. Application is key!
If you primarily sail on weekends or short trips, a rugged blue water cruiser like Catana or Discovery, with big rig and sails, may be more than you need. So be clear about what you intend to do with the catamaran and hone in on what is important to you right now. Why own and keep up a new expensive offshore catamaran when a smaller or pre-owned catamaran will do the job just fine
