See full version: Boat Trailer Hitch | Why is Tongue Weight Important When Towing Your Boat

The tricky thing with boats is that you can’t position the boat on the trailer in a way that gives you a proper tongue weight (10-15% of GTW). It’s not like you can pull the boat farther forward on the trailer if you are below the 10% tongue weight rating and vice versa. You also can’t position the boat farther back on the trailer if you’re exceeding 15% tongue weight rating. It’s not like a flatbed trailer with ATV’s loaded where you have the ability to move those items around in order to keep your tongue weight within that 10-15% of GTW range.

Whether you’re launching your boat into the ocean, a lake or other body of water, always remember to clean your hitch afterwards. Remove your Weigh Safe hitch from your tow vehicle, remove the slider from the draw bar and rinse with a light soap and water. Doing this will ensure that your hitch stays clean and functioning properly and doesn’t get debris build up.

Another important aspect to keep in mind with boats is that they hold water. Always check and make sure there isn’t any rain water or other water being stowed away inside your boat as this can completely throw off the weight of your boat and your tongue weight calculations.

Use a measuring tape for each measurement, and record to the nearest quarter inch. Additionally, make adjustments easy on yourself round up to the nearest whole number once you have your differential heights. Whole numbers are always easier to work with, and they won’t make a significant difference in the grand scheme of things. more

"The biggest culprit of a rough ride is having the trailer tongue sitting too low," Scroggins says. "Luckily it's an easy and cheap fix. For about $25 you can get a Reese hitch with the proper adjustment to give you that balanced ride." [links]

When the rig is balanced properly, you'll not only get a smoother ride, but you'll also maximize your gas mileage. here

You see, when Scroggins isn't pulling his bass boat all over creation, he's probably towing his 28-foot, 10,000-pound ocean boat to the beach to do some saltwater fishing. Both rigs come along nicely behind Big Show's Toyota Tundra, but there are important differences that Scroggins must account for before he ever leaves home. more

"When you're towing heavy loads — whether it's a bass boat or my ocean rig — it's critical to balance the weight of the boat on the trailer," Scroggins says. "That means putting it on a level surface and making sure it's riding evenly between the two sets of wheels on the tandem wheel trailer." more

If you park your tow vehicle and boat on a level surface and see that the tongue of the trailer is lower than it should be for a level ride, find a hitch that will raise it to the proper level. Similarly, if it's too high, you'll want one with the right drop-down. here

Few people log as many miles towing boats as the Elite Series pros. Therefore, few of us have as much experience and insight into the intricacies and nuances of towing a bass boat. And among those anglers who log tens of thousands of miles pulling their rigs all across the country, perhaps no one knows more about it than Florida's Terry Scroggins. [links]

Fast forward to a boat I just bought and plan to tow with a new SUV of the same tow capacity limit as my van, but boat and trailer together will weigh in much closer to that tow capacity limit. [links]

Newcomer to iBoats and loving the online environment! Question about towing a boat. When I had my single axle pop-up trailer that I towed with my minivan, the trailer always made the back of my van sag low. Could never figure out why since I constantly saw other vans like mine pulling heavier camper trailers with no sag at the rear. I tried installing airbags in the van suspension springs which helped a bit but not much. here

Could it be as simple as buying the right height hitch so that the ball is raised and level with the receiver of the boat trailer - when the boat trailer is sitting level? more
