The head gasket is one of the most important components of your car’s engine. It is a mechanical seal that is fitted between the engine block and piston cylinder head. Its purpose is to ensure that the compression process is contained within the combustion chamber, and to prevent the mixing of fluids such as the coolant and engine oil. here

CASE 1: The color of the oil is a light tan, like coffee with too much creamer. This is not good news and positively confirms that the head gasket on your 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L GM van (or mini-van, pick up, SUV) is blown. The solution to this problem is replacing both head gaskets. [links]

1.) The cylinder head (or heads) warped. This warpage causes the head gasket (or gaskets) to burn. [links]

Now, check what the color of the oil is and how thick it is. What you're doing is confirming one of two things: here

These are very easy tests to do, as a matter of fact, two of them are done with absolutely no tools at all. The third test is done using a engine compression tester. The fourth is the chemical block test. And as mentioned at the beginning, they are all explained in detail with their test result interpretations included.

Before you start, I suggest you take a quick glance at all three tests. The first two can be done under 5 minutes and in the majority of the cases, you probably won't have to do all three tests. If, for example, the first test, proves to you that the head gasket in blown. there's no need to proceed to the 2nd or 3rd test (unless for the sake of knowledge itself).

Drove truck home from work (1 1/2 hour drive). Everything normal, no problems, no doors, no alarms, nothing wrong. Next morning, when checking fluids before leaving for work again, found reservoir starting to change state into a " light/slushy type form. Drove other car to work. Came home checked engine oil condition, no change in color, odor, or viscosity, checked transmission fluid same results, checked actual fluid in radiator, no change, no harm was done. [links]

Drained all existing coolant from radiator, after cleaning out overflow with room temperature water, also, flushed all hoses in and out of coolant system. After allowing all to completely empty itself, I refilled with new dexcool coolant, only bumping engine at first to move fluid level so able to top off system. Then at idle only, while watching and listening to engine, allowed to idle with cab heat on until change in cab temperature from cold to just passed warm present. Then shut off engine, had to lay down before leaving for work again. Haven't actually driven this vehicle yet, still investigating what/why/how this occurred. [links]
