Top end isn't normally affected by too much when it comes to cavitation.

sound like the wear ring. If you have some nicks in your impeller that can cause the cavitation. If you are going to replace the wearring and your impeller looks beat up then you might as well change that. [links]

You should wait until you ski stops after a spin before excellorating. it can be hard on the engine more

The wear ring, and carbon ring. I always use OEM. The after market wear rings can be questionable. I've seen them be WAY too lose. and WAY too tight. But. if you get a good one. then you will save $$. BUT. if you get a bad one, then you have to buy another. You can get OEM for $50'ish if you look around. more

The aftermarket carbon seals are just OK. They do work. but they don't live as long. The one in your ski is probably OEM, and 16 year old. I bet you will burn out an aftermarket in 2 or 3 seasons. SO. if you are going to keep the ski. spend the extra $15 and get the OEM. here

Think of the impeller as tires on a car. If the tires are bald and you are on wet pavement and floor it, the tire can't grab and spin out. This is what the impeller is doing at there is too much of a gap between the wear rind and the impeller. Eventually the tires start to grab and you will get to full speed. Again, the impeller is much like this as once water starts to move through the tunnel and the ski starts to move the need for the near perfect tolerance in the wear ring decreases as the ski is moving and the impeller is gripping the water that is traveling through it. here

My question is, if the impeller is in NEED of being replaced what will be the symptoms?

With the early style (short stiff vanes) impeller t does need to be replaced at an interval no greater than 2 years, but annual is best. Usually by the time you get the drive pulled apart and the impeller housing off, what with using new base plate gaskets anyway, you might as well replace it anyway. Peace of mind and cheap insurance. Hi everyone, I've got a pretty new sterndrive and it probably only has 10 hours on it as this point. I see where people replace the impeller every year and every other etc. I understand the wisdom of preventative maintenance. more

Your boat’s impeller is a series of rubber vanes molded around a hub. The tips of these flexible vanes can wear out for many reasons due to simple use or if the boat is in sandy water. Abrasive sandlike material can cause the impeller to wear out faster. here

Impellers pump cold water into your boat’s engine to cool it down while in use. If you have a bad impeller it can cause big problems. more

Impellers can also wear out by becoming stiff and brittle due to the motor sitting unused for several seasons or being exposed to heat. Water lubricates the impeller, and if it’s run dry, the impeller can be ruined in a few seconds. here

If your impeller fails, the pump can’t pump cool water to the engine causing your engine to overheat. If you catch that your impeller is failing early on, you might avoid major problems. However, if you’re not fortunate enough to catch a bad impeller, the results can be catastrophic to your engine.
