I purchased my '86 Starcraft from a party that lived on the coast. Claimed he never had it in salt water, but when I started to replace the plywood floor, I found the water soaked flotation had to be removed. That is whe the real trouble started. The aluminum inside was deeply pitted and you couldn't see the trouble from the outside, because the paint was still holding.
If your boat was mine, and it only being January, I would start removing the floor, flotation, and anything else that would keep me from doing a full inspection. I would be sanding, grinding. scraping, and sand blasting my way to find the cause of water coming in. Then I would make the decision, is it worth trying to save. This website can help you save it, but 1st get to the root of the problem.
Sorry for the bad news, but I've been there and done that. I did save my '86, but it was alot of work and male pride not to have to admit to momma I made a mistake on the purchase. And I did actually enjoy working on the boat.

1983 smokercraft, 14' big fisherman, 25 hp Johnson tiller (newer than the boat but not sure of the year). My Father and I replaced the stern year before last as it was getting soft on me, we used marine grade of course. And my girlfriend and I rebuilt all the interior flooring and carpeting this last winter. I also installed the lighted switch panel for bilge, aerator, and livewell which are all new as well as wiring and plumbing. The hand winch and strap plus the trailer lift crank are only 2 years old bought new as well. Trailer is in great condition with new LED waterproof lights and Carlisle tires with only three summers of travel here locally (spare of course isn't as great but will do the job if needed). The 25 Johnson starts and runs great and was immaculately maintained and operated since my uncle originally bought it new (he just recently passed from Colon Cancer) the trolling motor was bought new 3 years ago and until this year was only ever used on a 10' alumacraft rowboat. This boat is very solid and in the last 2 years has been restored to near perfect and I can tell you firsthand is wonderful to fish in. Believe it or not that little 25 will really move it. I can pull our 14 y/o with me and my gf + all our fishing gear in a tube no problem (tried as an experiment here about a month ago). Includes battery and full cover. more
