Using your coolant temperature gauge as an example, the diagnostic procedure involves locating and disconnecting the sending unit. With the ignition on, the gauge should register cold. If you connect the sending unit wire to ground, the gauge should switch to read hot. here

None of the gauges work.

When the gauges seem to move erratically, or they are pegged at the highest possible reading, the problem is usually a bad component like an instrument voltage regulator or a bad ground. more

While many vehicles have gauges that show specific information about everything from the state of the charging system to the temperature of the coolant, some cars and trucks have warning lights. [links]

If you find that your cruise control works, but your speedometer isn’t working, then you should suspect a bad speedometer. The reverse is also true, so if both your speedometer and cruise control are malfunctioning, you can suspect a bad speed sensor or faulty wiring. [links]

If none of your dashboard warning lights turn on, including your check engine light, then it’s usually a fuse or a ground issue. This type of problem is diagnosed the same way as a gauge that doesn't work so you will have to check for power at the appropriate fuse and verify that the instrument cluster ground is okay. If those things check out, then the problem is usually a bad sending unit or wiring. [links]

In less common circumstances, the electronic control unit (ECU) could also be malfunctioning. If you take your car to a qualified technician, they will be able to connect to the ECU to read trouble codes and other data. Using specialized testing equipment, they will also be able to actually test the speed sensor itself.

When a single gauge stops working, the problem is either in the gauge, the wiring, or the sending unit. If you are comfortable locating and removing sending units and sensors, you can diagnose this type of problem yourself. Otherwise, you’ll have to take it to a mechanic.

There are a lot of different types of instrument cluster designs and configurations, but when all of the gauges in a car stop working at once, the problem is usually either a fuse or wiring problem. The first step in diagnosing this type of issue is to identify the fuse associated with the instrument cluster or gauges. more

When only one gauge or light stops working, the problem is either a bad sensor or a bad gauge. [links]

Most modern cars and trucks use speed sensors instead of cables, and the transition started in the 1990s. Some vehicles even have both a speed sensor and a cable, in which case the cable usually drives the speedometer while the speed sensor or wheel sensor tells the computer how fast the vehicle is moving. do you have any gauges that are working or are all the gauges out. also does the motor turn over from the key.

Pictures aren't really necessary since every gauge except the speedometer needs +12 volts on the "I" terminal when the key is on, ground on the ground terminal, the a signal from the sender (fuel, temperature, trim or whatever) on the "S" terminal. The internal light ("L" terminal) for each gauge is typically fed from the NAV/ANC switch but in some cases that terminal is powered whenever the key is in the RUN position. A voltmeter is needed to verify that voltage is present. If some gauges work and others don't, suspect a sender or sender wiring problem. If none of the gauges work suspect a power or ground problem since all of the gauges are daisy chained from one gauge to the next. Looking at wiring is not a valid check. A multi-tester is your friend here. Speedometers are mechanical devices and require only +12 volts and ground for the internal light. A plastic tube runs from the speedo head to the pitot at the back of the boat. This will be a separate unit or built into the lower unit on the engine. Tachometers have a "sense" signal on the the "S" terminal that originates from the the charging system. If the battery is not being charged (look at the voltmeter) then that would account for the tachometer not working either. Fuel senders are typically 33 - 240 ohm resistive devices. You need a multitester to verify operation of any sender. If you use the search feature in this forum you will find a multitude of Fuel Gauge troubleshooting posts, most with diagrams and testing procedures. Other gauges work on the same principle. None of them work without +12 volts, ground and the sense signal. more

Thanks for the reply guys. Turning the key turn the engine on but none of the three gauges work. Let me check again on all the wires and see if there s 12v power. Also will try and take some picture. will update soon thanks. [links]

I have a pink wire coming into the dash that the previous Speedometer/Gas gauge had hooked to the white cable. I am hooking that pink one to the white on this new gauge to match. All wiring diagrams I can find say gas will be black and white. However, tracking down and looking at the gas sensor in the hull (only place I could find wiring on the tank) the output wiring looks like pink and green. The pink comes into the dash accompanied with a blue (for nav lighting which lights up the gauges) as well as a black. The green does not as it seems to continue from back of the boat onward toward the front. The black that comes into the dash with the pink I've spliced to the other blacks in the dash (I assume all negative and can be spliced together).

Swapped out 6Y5 Speedometer and a 6Y5 Tachometer. Bought them on amazon and they look like the old ones but are definitely a newer model (they matched up with a 2012 wiring manual) but the wiring didn't exactly match what I had but close.

I have to think the pink is the gas gauge as I can't think of another reason it's run into the dash panel. It's weird to me that the green doesn't somehow come back to the dash as well. I also don't know if the gas gauge works in a manner where the green ties into black negative system somewhere.
