Just to show you how to check resistance take a look at the following image, and the settings on the voltmeter: [links]

Third, you will wire the four 100 ohm 1 watt resistors side by side (in parallel is the technical term) and connect them to terminal I on the gas gauge. You will connect the 50 Ohm 10 watt to terminal I on the temperature gauge.

First problem I found using my voltmeter was a short in the fuel gauge. The ignition terminal (I) showed zero ohms resistance when I connected the other test wire to the case. No resistance means a short. 12 volts straight to the body of the Jeep… not good. This short that not only blew the gauge fuse, but also fried our new fuel sending unit I had just installed. I opened the case of the new speedo, removed the fuel gauge, wrapped it in electrical tape, reinstalled it and now the short was gone. The fuse stopped blowing and all lights kept working. here

First off your new gauge will have a wire going from A on the gas gauge to A on the temperature gauge. Remove that. We will wire these gauges separately now. [links]

Second, go to Radio Shack or order resistors online. At Radio Shack I was able to pick up packs of 100 ohm 1 watt resistors (the small ones in the photo below) and 50 Ohm 10 watt resistors (big white one)

Next I reconnected all the wiring, and immediately found that the fuel gauge and temperature gauge pegging all the way to Full and Hot again…. but why? This is a new gauge!! Shouldn’t it work. here

At its most basic, a fuel gauge is a handy indicator telling you how much gas or diesel you have in your vehicle and how long you can drive until you need more. It’s a car feature we tend to take for granted until we have a broken gas gauge. Have you been there? You filled up a few days ago, have driven each day and the gas gauge is stuck on full? Or what about you just went to the fuel station to fill up and your fuel gauge is reading empty when the tank is full?

Circuit Problems – The gas gauge circuit is wiring that connects the gas gauge, sending unit, the battery, and a ground. The provides the power from the car to operate the electrical components of the vehicle. Because the gas gauge runs through this circuitry, if there is a problem such as a loose connection or corrosion within the circuit, this can cause an error with the gas gauge reading. If you feel comfortable under the hood, go ahead and check for loose or dirty wiring. Sometimes it’s the smallest thing causing a seemingly big problem. To learn more about circuitry, check out how car electrical systems work. here

Fuel Gauge is Faulty – This is less likely than the previous two issues. The gas gauge is the visual indicator between the fuel tank and the sending unit. In other words, it’s what you read inside the cabin of your vehicle telling you how much fuel you have. Typically, if there is an issue with the fuel gauge, there is a problem with receiving input from the sender. This could be from a bad ground or once again related to the circuitry. A proper diagnosis can help determine if this is the issue. [links]

Gas gauge test. This inspection involves another voltage testing, and the reading has to be exactly the same as the fuel sender test. more

Fuel sender test. Conduct the test when the tank is lower than half to avoid splashing hot oil. Use the multimeter to check for voltage on the pins, and it has to be 5 V or 12 V on one pin. here

A vehicle’s gauge system comprises three basic parts: gauge, circuit, and sender. A fault in these parts will cause gauge failure or make it give incorrect readings. The four ways of how a fuel gauge can fail are: more

The sending unit continuously moves and rubs on the variable resistor when you drive the car. The constant friction wears off the contacts, leading to its failure. [links]

Instrument cluster self-test: The procedure involves doing a series of tasks including switching the headlight on, press on the odometer button, etc. The task sequence could be different for older vehicles. You need to check the owner’s manual to know the correct order.

The least common of all causes and its repair is the most expensive. Most modern vehicles have a fully integrated circuit. So, when one part fails, the whole unit needs replacement. here

The Autolite speedo was used in the Slat Grill MB only and is a different looking speedo to all the others. It has a bezel shaped the same as the Autolite gauges found in all MBs, the number font is the same style as the gauges, the needle is thin and pointed and is the same shape as the gauge needles and the face did not have the 1 mph increment marks. here

The third type also has 60 mph face with the model No. KS-40363-N printed at the top. All three speedometers have white numbers on black wheels and all number fonts are the same. The early type has the long needle. The mid type can have either the long needle or the short half moon needle. The late type has the half moon needle. The late type also has a different case to the other two. The case shape is the same but it has a screw on plate added to the back of it. [links]

These were used in very early GPWs. The faces are identical to the later style with the exception of the Amp gauge which has Stewart Warner made in USA printed around the bottom of the face unlike the later Amp gauge which just had a block F. Evidence I have found seems to show these were only used in the early GPWs with the MB type chassis.

The model number is 590 AD and the date code is a letter and number printed after that. The letter is the year and the number is the month. The fifth rib has been found on:
N2 - M9 - L11 - L6 - K7 more

The second type S-W has smaller white numbers on black wheels and are a different font to the early type. The
numbers and increment lines on the face are printed further away from the outer edge or closer to the center of the face. These numbers on the face are squared off at the ends where the early type is rounded. The model number printed at the top edge of the face is 403261.
