Yes, you can use carburetor cleaner to clean a throttle body, but not without making a few compromises. Carb cleaner doesn’t penetrate and hang around to break up heavy deposits, so you’ll end up having to use more of it in multiple passes to remove heavy carbon buildup.
You don’t need to remove a throttle body to clean it. If you have a DBW throttle body, DO NOT MOVE THE THROTTLE PLATE MANUALLY TO CLEAN IT, especially with the key in the ON position. Have them depress the gas pedal all the way to open the throttle plate so you can gain access to do your cleaning. more
Cleaning the throttle body makes a difference in car performance and drivability. It is a solution to anyone experiencing rough running of the engine, unstable running of the vehicle, and decreased vehicle performance when still brand new.
no the TB should not completely closed while on idle. if so, the motor will shut off. Yes but they are arguing that TB should be closed, while all air flows through IAC, which is controlled by ECU. Point at the idle adjust screw, tell them what it does, then hit them with something heavy. more
Once the throttle body is exposed, spray the throttle-body cleaner inside the air duct, and use the brushes to gently dislodge the dirt, gum and varnish that are present. Note: Be very careful not to let the thin, plastic spray nozzle (or anything else!) fall into the throttle-body opening.
wd40 is a degreaser, just spray it inside throttle body on the walls, and wipe it out real well, itll clean it up nice.. definetly do not spray it into ur motor while it is running though. however tb/carb cleaner works the best.
Spray the entire air cleaner inside and out with carburetor cleaner. Wipe the air cleaner dry with shop towels. Install a new air filter element and re-install the air cleaner unit onto the carburetor.
Vacuum off the top of the engine area to prevent dirt and debris from being sucked into the engine while the air cleaner is not in place. more
Remove the air cleaner unit from the engine by unscrewing the wing nut. You might need pliers to turn the wing nut if it is very tight.
Spray the entire carburetor inside and out with carburetor cleaner to loosen the gunk and varnish. Use shop rags to wipe up any heavy grease and gunk loosened by the carb cleaner. more
Carburetor cleaner is designed to remove heavy varnish and gunk from the inside and outside of a vehicle's carburetor. If the carburetor is not cleaned periodically, it will begin to affect the vehicle's mileage and performance. The carb should be cleaned a couple of times a year to prevent buildup and keep the engine running smooth.
Start the vehicle. With the vehicle running, spray carburetor cleaner down the throat of the carburetor and around the outside. The engine will pick up a bit as the vehicle burns the carburetor cleaner. Wait a few minutes and shut off the engine.
After cleaning the carburetor, you now need to reassemble its parts properly. Reattach the cover and the linkage. Place the air filter in its original place. Use a screwdriver to tighten the parts of the air filter assembly properly. here
Following the steps mentioned above shall help you clean your mower’s carburetor more efficiently. Typically, one should clean the carburetor once per season. It enables the lawnmower to function without developing issues. [links]
To clean the carburetor without removing it, you need the right kind of carburetor cleaner. There are many different types and qualities of carburetor cleaner. Purchase some commercial lawn mower carburetor cleaner. Make sure it is of the best quality. The steps below can be followed for efficient spraying: here
Before you begin repairing any mechanical or electrical machinery, you need to turn off its engine. In this case, turn off your mower’s engine if you were already mowing and allow it to cool down. Wait for a few minutes before attempting to clean the carburetor.
While cleaning, if you encounter any problem in following the steps, you can check the following video for further guidance: here

The engine running rough for a moment after using throttle body cleaner is a normal symptom. This should only last for a short period of time and then go away. If the issue does not go away after a few start ups or a short drive, it is possible that the throttle position sensor or mass air flow sensor could have been damaged as a result of using the throttle body cleaner. Many throttle body cleaners will specify if they are sensor safe. IF the throttle body cleaner is not sensor safe, one of the sensors may be fouled out. I would recommend having a drivability inspection performed on your vehicle to determine the exact cause if this issue persists. Consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can come to your home or office to determine the cause of this issue. [links]
This is probably a dumb question. I just changed the IAC valve and while I did that, I tried to clean out the throttle body on my 97 Ford Ranger w/ 4.0 V6. I sprayed throttle body cleaner down the throttle bore while the engine was running. I didn't remove it from the engine and the engine was running. Did I do something stupid? Because now it has a rough idle when it starts up, but when it warms up it runs fine. here
