I wouldn't worry about going full syn. The Pennzoil Marine is a good oil and you can get it from Wally at about $20 a gallon. I get it online and have it shipped to my door. If you want to enjoy some reads from people who truly know about oil, go to Bob is the oil guy. There are some smart people over there that actually know what they are talking about vs many on here that are brand loyal.
I would also suggest using a different ratio for regular petroleum vs synthetic. I run about double the amount of regular from whatever everyone else recommends for synthetic. The manufacturers tend to load up on the additives in synthetics so you can run them at a leaner ratio. I'll use either 20:1 or 25:1 with regular stuff. So far my engines have seemed to last a really long time. The '86 X2 in my sig has by my best guess at least 400 hours on it since replacing the crank and pistons and a bunch of that time was with 195 psi compression. It's still going strong and has retained compression very well. But I'm not a fan of Pennzoil. Much of the time I've used Valvoline.

Him: “What about Amsoil? I’ve heard that’s the best oil out there.” [links]
Him: “Okay, but what about that new Pennzoil Ultra stuff? I’ve heard that’s a much better product. Is that better than Amsoil, or not?”
Me: “That’s a good brand as well. We just don’t tend to see much difference in wear metals between different oil types, so whichever one you want to use is fine.”
Him: “So, I’m using Rotella in this engine… is that the best choice?” more

Re: What is considered the best TCW3 oil lately?
Some people only run break in oil for a relatively short duration, then change it out. In that case it may make more financial sense to use the non syn. here
First of all, use only oil that meets the maker's spec for that outboard. For most outboards that is still TC-W3.
