A malfunctioning ignition coil could result in overheating. Overheating damages the covering of the coil, resulting in tears. This tear results in leaking oil. Again, leaking oil doesn’t only result from the housing of the wire coils. The gap in the spark plugs can also cause it. These bigger gaps are often a result of erosion. Now the ignition coil will work at a higher voltage, and as a result, the coil overheats and leaks oil after breaking. [links]

This fuel explodes before coming out, causing severe damages to the system in the not so distant future. Spark plugs can also result in such problems if they aren’t functioning properly or the fuel-air mixture is too dense.

Fuel leakage due to a worn-out fuel injector can be another cause. The time when an ignition coil is not working properly, the oxygen sensor becomes faulty as well. They don’t detect the right amount of fuel required and deliver more fuel than required. here

If you start your car and still hear a clicking sound, this means the coil still functioning. However, a bad ignition coil will not produce any energy at all that could light up the internal combustion to start. here

If it goes unrecognized, then the situation would become worse, and your car will stop right at the spot where it is. You can face it when you are starting your car and trying to increase its speed or when you stop, and the engine shuts off or while slowing down or changing gears too fast. Transmission problems, the fuel delivery system, the idle air control actuator, and a clogged EVR value is another area to look into for a stalling or misfiring engine. here

If the coil is weak or damaged it will produce less spark energy than it is designed to. This will produce a weaker spark at the spark plug gap, making the engine harder to start. Spark plugs that are continuously fouling can indicate a weak spark. [links]

Outboard motors are designed to provide years of trouble-free operation, and nothing spoils a weekend outing like one that will not run properly. Maintenance on these engines is relatively straightforward, and many of them sit for an entire off season without being started. When problems do arise with the ignition system it is rarely the coil, but they do sometimes fail.

If the coil is not producing enough voltage it can cause the engine to run erratically. If the problem seems to come and go, such as smooth acceleration and then rough acceleration, it could indicate that the coil is not able to maintain a steady voltage output. here

The coil on your outboard is a sealed unit. The body should be completely intact and free of cracks. If an oil-filled coil is wet on its outside surface, it is cracked and leaking. It should be replaced. here

If the coil has failed completely, it will no longer produce any voltage. Without the increased voltage of the coil, the energy at the spark plug will be insufficient to jump the gap. This will result in the outboard failing to start. here

Your outboard's ignition coils or CDMs (Capacitor Discharge Modules) provide a high voltage pulse to your Spark Plugs.
Ignition Coils get their voltage from the Switchbox.
CDM's are essentially ignition coils with built-in switchboxes.

Whereas in the past, vehicles used a distributor to pass the thousands of volts needed to create a spark from the ignition coil to the sparkplugs, modern ignition systems now use one coil for each sparkplug or in some cases one coil for two sparkplugs. Many times, these multiple coils are mounted in a single mounting block with multiple terminals, thus the term coil pack. more

Original Equipment Replacement
Beck Arnley is a well known name in the automotive ignition parts industry. They are favored by many mechanics, especially those that work mostly on import cars. The Beck Arnley 178-8025 rotary engine coil pack is a direct replacement for original equipment parts on older Mazda cars with a rotary engine. You can expect to pay about $55 for one. [links]

Fortunately, there is an easy way to test the coil packs in your vehicle and make sure they're working as they should. You need to use ohm meter to test the coil pack for continuity. Make sure you have the approximate ohm values for the coil pack. To find this information, research your car's engine on the Internet or purchase a Chilton's or Haynes manual to find out what the mega ohms reading on the coil pack should be. more
