She is interested in selling the motor, and thought that it might appeal to an antique outboard collector.

Can anyone give me an approximate value? Or have an intertest in it.
The motor is located in Gresham, OR at this time.
I went on line for a look at E-Bay, and purchased a DVD of the original manual an saw a 5.5 HP of the same vintage there. [links]

There should be an ID plate on the transom mount that will ID the motor andallow you to consult a parts listing.
If it has the coil on the side like that; I don’t think it has points. It’s “Solid State”. more
I had one like that and I got it running by swapping that coil with an OMC coil; not the “Universal Magneto” coil…..but an OMC coil from a later model engine that had two coils mounted on the powerhead much like your Ted Williams does. I had a couple of those coils sitting around; I probably wouldn’t have invested that much in the Teddy otherwise. here
hello, a friend gave me a ted williams 7.5 single cylinder air cooled engine. it has no spark. it has a coil on the side of the engine that is cracked. do these engines have points? not sure of year. thanks
They are reliable enougn I suppose but very loud and lots of vibration. Also; there is an impeller that serves to cool the mid-section. If that is not functioning youi will eventually destroy the engines’ bottom seal. [links]
It’s probably an Eska, with a Tecumseh engine. You may be able to use lawn mower engine ignition parts. [links]
Made by McCulloch. (McCulloch bought out Scott-Atwater). Some people love them, some hate them. You will quickly decide when you start working on it. Actually, they can run quite well. more
This motor calls to me, even though I don’t like these, or need it.
It’s cheap, and not far away.
I just acquired a cute and pristine 1968 Ted Williams, I like it a lot, just no luck getting it to crank over. [links]
On this 9.5 I have, someone drilled a bunch of holes and knocked out a section of the casting. Why, I don’t know. Maybe to get at the carb adjusting needles easier or to install a new fuel line. One bad point about them is the hoods. They are made of thin plastic, not fiberglass, and get brittle with age. Picking up the motor by the cover could be enough to break it. The one in your pics looks intact. Guard it with your life! here
I’m excited and so are my boys!!
I’m in the "same boat" (no pun intended)… [links]
