Colin MacRae is a Below Deck Sailing Yacht season two cast member, and we've gathered some fun and fascinating information about his life. He is the newest chief engineer on board, working alongside the exterior team and Captain Glenn for most of the season. Colin hasn't been a part of the drama like his other crew members, but he always enjoys watching from the sidelines. Viewers can usually find Colin working in the engine room, rather than getting involved in crew politics. more

Fans were introduced to Colin for the first time when he joined the Parsifal crew during the first episode of the season. Colin immediately became close with the first mate on deck Gary King (who has been called out for his lack of appeal by fans. The pair continued to have a close friendship throughout the season. He often spoke about his girlfriend back home and even opened up about his dog, who had to be put down while he was on charter. Colin may be getting the least amount of screen time, but he does have quite an interesting background.

Colin was born and raised in New Zealand but moved to Panama, where he lives on his catamaran. According to his BravoTV bio, Colin is a long-time sailor who worked as a chief engineer on superyachts. He did this for more than eight years before joining Below Deck Sailing Yacht. Before joining the show, he was living in Panama with his girlfriend Martina. They traveled in their newly-repaired catamaran. His girlfriend was someone he leaned on during his time on the show, which was filmed in Croatia. He would often call her for emotional support. She was also the one who contacted him about his dog Marty, who had to be put down after falling ill. Colin was devastated by the loss. It was heartbreaking for him that he couldn't be there for his furry friend.

You could never accuse the Mirror of being elegant. Yet despite its rudimentary appearance, early reviewers were keen to register their approval. While the concept of bringing egalitarianism into sailing appealed, what really mattered was that Holt’s maritime design experience had combined with Bucknell’s understanding of what the DIY enthusiast could achieve, to produce not only a seaworthy craft, but one that would appeal to real sailors. The family-size, build-it-yourself Mirror sailing dinghy was a masterpiece of design that made sailing accessible to ordinary people in the 1960s and 1970s.

Everything about the Mirror was designed with simplicity and popularity in mind. Until the mid-20th century, sailing had been an elite pastime with only the wealthy able to entertain the idea. Yet with the rise in dinghy sailing, the sport developed grass roots appeal and by the time the newspaper of the working class got involved in the 1960s, a new icon was added to the list of miniskirts, the Beatles and Flower Power.

With construction requiring neither special tools nor woodworking experience, the two-to-three-person Mirror soon became the most popular sailing boat in the UK. here

While the price tag of just over £60 seemed to imply the dinghy might be cheap and cheerful, it was in fact a masterpiece of design. The kit contained everything needed to build a complete sailing boat, apart from bonding resin and final finishing material. Pre-cut wood materials, spars, hardware, main and jib sails, standing rigging and lines just needed patient assembly in the garage. here

In essence, the superstructure of the hull and deck was an arrangement of flat marine plywood panels stitched together with copper wire, the joins reinforced with glass-fibre tape. As the hull was in the ‘pram’ format, meaning it was double transom-ended (squared off at both ends), there were no complicated curves to negotiate, so anyone with flair for home improvement and a little time to spare could turn the dream of owning a yacht into an affordable reality. here

At the heart of this approach is a multiphysics model of the boat that enables the engineering and design team to rapidly simulate the performance impact of a host of different factors “We have a model of the forces generated by the sail, a model of the mass distribution of hull, a model of crew weight, and a model of the lift and drag generated by the rudder and the foil,” explained Holroyd. “We effectively put all of those into a solver and it tells us how fast the boat is going and what the forces are on each of those individual components.” more

One of the keys here, is giving the team access to the vertically integrated environment of a motorsport team. “In F1 you need to be be able to control as much of the key processes as you can, and what that gives us is a fantastic design, development and manufacturing base that you would rarely find in other industries and that’s been really useful for this team. Just to be able to help them develop quickly and engineer out of unexpected issues.” [links]

For Holroyd, having access to all of this expertise and technology has been a real eye-opener. “You’ll be debugging a problem and will say “it would be great if we could understand what’s happening to the geometry here and the next thing you know they turn up with a high speed stereo camera that puts targets all over the wing and they can capture the geometry at thousand frames per second while you’re running the actuation! The layers and layers of capability that have built up in an organisation like that over a very long period of time is staggering.” [links]

At the time of writing, the entire team – along with its two giant yachts, the Britannia 1 development boat and its successor – Britannia – had relocated to its newly constructed base in Auckland’s viaduct harbour. Following a final fit out, the boats will take to the water ahead of next February’s challenger series, which will see the British team compete for a chance to take on the current trophy holder; Emirates Team New Zealand.
