Marine AC generators are our most popular range and what you would normally expect to find tucked away in an engine bay or locker powering the boats onboard equipment. Commonly supplied in 230v/400v 50Hz (European voltage) with 120v 60Hz (US voltage) variants also available. Parallel connection fully possible with both iSeries & xControl generator ranges which means two (or more) generators with different size outputs can be connected in parallel to provide a joint power supply for peak periods or to work independently for load sharing. Please talk to our technical sales team for more information. more

Look for a generator with this feature that will shut itself down in the event of a possible overheating situation that could wreck it.

Users have tested it on campgrounds, construction sites, during power outages and tailgates. Switching to the Eco-Mode may be necessary for it to power small appliances one at a time, such as microwaves or coffee makers. more

To find the best generator for a boat out there, we rated the top generator models by engine power, rated/maximum output, fuel tank capacity, noise level, weight, and portability. We also noted whether the generator had issues with the pull-starter, carb clearance for storage and oil fill. Engine power is an important consideration because you need to know that the generator you choose can keep up with the demands of whatever job you need it to do. With marine generators, it is especially important to note fuel tank capacity, because you don’t want to run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. Since space is at a premium on boats, you will want to make sure the generator’s noise level stays at a comfortable purr, so it won’t interfere with any of your activities. Weight and portability to carry the generator to and from your vessel have also been considered. Each extra pound aboard a vessel will affect its speed and buoyancy, so it’s important to know your vessel’s capacity and consider the weight of the generator.

The Wen 56200i is a good balance between power and price. It is lightweight enough for ease of portability, quiet enough to avoid disturbing your neighbors while camping, and offers clean power for delicate electronics.

The design of a generator has more to do with noise level than the fuel used to power it. It is helpful to check the noise rating (and the fine print included there) to determine just how noisy or quiet a generator will be.

As far as noise is concerned, the generators on our list of the best range from 48 to 60 decibels; to give you an idea of how quiet that is, the average home noise is 40 decibels, and 60 decibels is akin to the noise level of background music or normal conversation.

When it comes to choosing a generator, the first thing to think about is how many devices or appliances will need to be powered by it in order to figure out how many watts are appropriate for your needs. As a rough guide, if a device you need to power uses 250 running watts, its starting wattage is around three times that number. Multiplying 250 by four (3x starting watts and 1x running watts) will show that you need a generator with a minimum of 1000 watts.

Generac is a top name when it comes to generators and its iQ3500 portable inverter generator with 3,500 watts lives up to its name—and then some. The crowd is divided on whether it's "quieter than a Honda" as mentioned in the product title on Amazon, but just the fact that this is even up for debate—considering that Honda is touted as having the quietest generators around—is a very good sign. Many reviewers have commented on its fuel efficiency, and one of the 2,700+ reviews reads, "This unit is so quiet and so much more gas efficient than my old unit," and another, "It is very, very quiet. I put a gallon of gas in it this morning and it’s been running over 11 hours." [links]
