Fully welded vehicle trailer hitch is strong and durable. Draw-Tite's Tested Tough guarantee ensures that this hitch exceeds industry standards. The combination of an e-coat base and a powder coat finish provides excellent rust protection.

For hitches, only get one that's designed for an XJ. The "universal fit" trailer hitches just suck. They bolt together, hang down low, and just generally look pretty janky. I have much more faith in a product that's designed for my vehicle, bolts right up, and is welded all together. That means far fewer possible points of failure due to loosening bolts. The univeral fit ones just look like an erector set to me. more

If you want to install the hitch yourself, you will notice that there will probably be a nut strip inside the unibody framerail on one side. The other side won't have a nut strip. That's OK though because the trailer hitch hardware will come with these metal squares or rectangles with square holes in them. You basically fish big ass carriage bolts through the hole in the back of the frame (right where the back bumper is) to drop those bolts inside the frame so that the threaded part is protruding downward. At that point you can put a nut on each one of the bolts that's hanging down and you're in business. There is a special piece of wire that's used to thread the bolts in place and its really not a big deal. It sounds more complicated than it is. Watch a few youtube videos of people installing hitches on various vehicles if you're having trouble fishing those bolts through the frame. [links]

You want to buy a class 3 bumper hitch. That's a hitch with a 2 inch square opening. The ball size you'll probably want is a 2 inch ball. Make sure the threaded part of the ball fits nicely into the hole in the ball mount. The ball mount is the thing that goes into the square opening and your chrome ball bolts onto. There are two common shank sizes for hitch balls so make sure you buy the correct one so it'll fit in your ball mount. The other thing to do is get a ball mount with a ball already attached. Hell, they even sell ball mounts at Walmart. Make sure the one you select drops down far enough so that the trailer you're towing is basically level. You don't want to have the tongue of the trailer sticking up towards the sky because the contents of the trailer will slide to the rear of the trailer when you're going down the road and you'll have a tough time opening up the trailer's door. more

You can tow, but I'd try to keep it on the lighter end of the spectrum. I've towed the 2 axle enclosed uhaul trailers with my XJ and even though its an automatic it was totally hating life in the summer heat and completely overheated on me as soon as I reached my destination.
