Re: How many hp do i need to wakeboard tube or ski? here
Success depends a lot on how heavy the boat is. 500 lb - no problem. 750 lb -borderline - 1,000 lb unlikely. Weight being the enemy of performance - if you boat on a lake that does not require a spotter, having the driver-only helps. If the skier is a light weight then it could be fine. [links]
I have a similar question. I'm looking at a 17' fiberglass Dorel with a 115 Johnson. The only thing I want this for is wakeboarding and I need it to be able to tow a full grown person and pull them up really quickly. I'm worried that we're going to have made a huge mistake.

Definitely do NOT use a ski pole. The higher tow point will cause the front of the boat to rise and keep it from getting up on plane. Pull from the eyes low on the transom for the best hole shot. [links]
As to being a flat bottomed boat, does that mean you can't go through small whitecaps without pounding yourself to pieces? I have a little 15 foot runabout now and every time I come to any one foot wave, I have to power down to go through it. I assumed the 16 foot C-dory would be able to handle it better. Any input on that? more
Very few people use a C-Dory to pull water skiers - not really the intended use. But can it be done - sure.
Fortunately he wasn't hurt and I didn't lose my job as his EA. (Executive Assistant). I was a Commander in the Navy at the time.
Good luck with your search for the best boat for your use.
50 hp is marginal for lightweight skiers. wakeboarding does not require high torque starts like watersking because you ride the board up like a airplane wing. Waerski tips start with the tips up and you plow the water to a plane. If you plan on a lot of skiing especially slolom you will need a larger boat. Insted of looking for a larger motor, put the money tword a boat at least 18 ft over 150hp. you probably can find a used boat for the same price as a motor. Retrival of skiers with your current boat will be difficult. Inboard ski boats usiually have large engines which will be necessary if you have skiers ovre 200 lbs. who slolom.
The horsepower should be ok unless your trying to pull a very heavy inexperienced skier. My sisters and I spent our teenage years skiing behind a 15' wooden runabout with 40 hp Evinrude. What concerns me is the tiller, I may be wrong but tiller steering especially with a 50 hp would be too unstable for safe skiing. more
Just a quick follow up. From this tread I see that it is easier to pull tubes and wake boards than it is to do skis or slalom skis. here
